HI i have a known breeding pair of veiled chameleons.
I am the 3rd owner and from what i know the female had a batch mid last year.
I would like to know how do i tell that they are ready for mating what are tell tale signs and when are they normally ready for mating time is there a specific time of year or is it just any time?
I read up on the breeding signs and was lead to believe that duck egg blue spots were the female sign she is ready to mate i have put them together once and now scared to do it again as she was receptive and did mate (or looked to) from mating videos i have seen on the internet but unfortunetly as i read that the female turns dark once inseminated i left her in with the male and he bit her tail which has now dried up and end fallen off,
and could u also tell me why the pictures of your lovely veileds are so bright and different colours and mine are the colour they are (pictures added to message)
Would be very greatful for and info or help u could give me as i am a little stuck as what to do now

how long have you been keeping chams is this your first not to be judging you but why are you in a hurry to breed again just asking

this is my first time of having chameleons i have a few reptiles and didnt like the conditions the chams were in so i sort of rescued them.
Her last batch that i know of were around june last yr if not before information was very sparse as to what happened when 1st owners had them.
I got them off a woman that horded reptiles i took 4 off her as she also had 16 dogs and the environment was grose
i also took off her hands
a Blue tongued skink and an oscillated skink

I always take my female in hand and hold her outside the male cage. If she is not receptive she will his and gape and turn dark. If she is receptive she will remain calm. How much of the tail did she lose? Is she able to use it to wrap around branches? You can also do it the other way around. If you ever do try to mate the two it sounds like you need to put the male in the female cage. DO NOT LEAVE THEM. It could be that these two just don't like each other. I have heard on the forum that a male actually killed the female when left alone to mate. Just an FYI. I am sure that there will be some more experienced comments later, but that's just my 2 cents.

the only time she gaped was when he grabbed her,
she didnt change colour either
she`s always been same colour. doesnt look to change.
she`s lost about an inch off end of tail but still uses it ok curls up ect.

as far as the tail is concerned keep an eye on it! my female got an infection in her tail after she injured it and has had to have an inch of it amputated, twice!! (she only has a stub now but she's had a successful mating since and has leanrt to live just fine with her stump) The thing with infection is it travels up th inside of the tail because thats were the soft tissue is by the time u notice it on the outside its pretty much too late for the inside bit.
Im not suggesting this will happen with yours so please dont worry too much, if u are worried then a very weak iodine solution should be used to clean the end of her tail, if anymore of the tail does dry up i would suggest u take her to a vet!

I hope this helps a bit, please remeber this is a worst case scenario that i have experianced and i may not be the case with yours xxx
