Help- what is this???

LT2012

New Member
We found this in LT's cage today a little while after feeding him. We've started giving him roaches and he seems to really like them. Not sure what this is... if it's from the roach or if he's dehydrated or what. The one pic shows it from the front, and then when we pulled the leaf down we found more. And here's a recent pic of LT.

Please HELP:confused:

i agree it does kinda look like sap.....but it also looks like sometthing from a roach.......that plant looks similar to the one ii have in my python tank if so then thats not sap

i did just a quick search and didn't find anything about sap but some species of that plant are posionase.....i have no clue if this was a reputable site or not......and i don't know much about this plant.....and i don't want to alarm you ....

was this happing before the roaches.....if it is from the plant i would remove it just to be safe...... if were you i would also take a look on the forums safe plants list under chameleon resources. you might be able to find your pant there though i dout it. i ont think i've ever seen it on there. hopefully some else can help you bette then i can.

It looks like an unfertilized egg sac or ‘slug’ to me so you probably have a female chameleon. This would also explain why she hasn’t been eating as much for you lately.

Here is a fresh unfertilized egg sac from a live bearing chameleon for you to compare. I don't think I have any pictures of the slugs once they've started to dry out.

this morning we gave him a dubia roach that was a little bigger than normal and it took him a couple minutes to chew it up and get him down. that was all he ate today. he's only eaten 5 roaches we just started giving them to him in the past 2 weeks.

and just out of curiosity we thought only males jacksons had 3 horns???

It does look like an egg sac - and having researched Jackson's, I have read that the female only has one smaller born on the tip of her nose so if your....uh, guy has three horns but is laying egg sacs then I don't know what to tell you!! This is quite perplexing!!

wow.. we are confused even more ... we were leaning towards LT eating too fast or the feeder(roacH) was too big.. not thinking there was a possibility this is a female....

Dehydration

I'd say he's a bit dehydrated.
When I first got a Jackson's he excreted the same type of thing and I had thought that it was an egg sac but it wasn't.
Are you running a dripper so he has access to water between mistings?
A dripper can be as simple as a clean milk container with a pinhole poked in the bottom of it.
As important to Jackson's as plenty of water is (more than for veileds or panthers) , don't leave accumulations of water or wet substrate in the cage overnight, because bacteria and/or mold will grow in it and can give a cham a respiratory infection.
Good clear close up pictures of your cham will clear any doubts.

Any chance we could get a few more clean pics of your cham?

Ditto!

Usually I can spot, identify and sex a chameleon at 50 yards but I’m having a hard time with yours. Can you post some up close and clear shots of the head (side and top views), head and body and tail base? (Either on this thread or a new one in the Chameleon ID section) As I mentioned some females do have 3 horns and getting your animal sexed properly will only help you and the chameleon and possibly answer some of the problems you’ve previously been having.

ok , yes we have a dripper going throughout the day. We don't have alot of pictures of him because we don't want to startle him or stress him out but the few we have i attached. Hope they help.

This is strange. It does look like an egg sack and it does look like a male Xantholophus. Very interesting. As far a roaches and Jackson's, I always try to feed my Jackson's undersized roaches. They struggle with eating roaches as it seems that their jaws are not strong enough to crush the larger ones.

Yeah we did alot of research before we got LT...and being first time owners we wanted a male so we didn't end up with babies or anything.......this is quite interesting...... but we're not sure what that was. He's been fine since.. eating fine, drinking, and climbing all over. Very strange!!:)
