Well, the bees in Africa are a lot different than English honey bees, that's for sure. The docile honey bee has a wicked sting whereas the African bee has a very mild sting. Even so, they do tend to shoot for the head and then bite the insect, so likely the wasp was dead and not really capable of stinging before the stinger got close to the chameleon's face. My chickens snap up scorpions with seeming impunity.
