Just gotta jacksons chameleon on nov 25th had him for little over a month now and on the 26th of december he stopped eating the crickets i was feeding him. he went to the bottom of the cage for a whole day then i got worried and moved him bac to where he usually roams then he went on a branch and fell off from the top of the cage and he stayed at the bottom off the cage for todays now hes at the side of the cage and hes bin there ever since oh yea and breath with his mouth open from time to time its kinda weird

Get him to a vet asap. Sounds like he has an upper resp. infection. This can kill him quickly. A vet will be able to diagnose and give him antibiotics. Keep us posted. David

but im not using a glass aquarium im using the mesh type exo terra somthing how can he get a respiratory infection

They can still get a uri. Could have accidently aspirated some water or not enough humidity in the air. This really isn't something you can manage yourself. If he's that weak, it indicates he may be in an advanced stage. They can go downhill very quickly.

jacksons

If your animal is wild caught they can catch upper resp. infections very easily.... I would take him to the vet. Bacteria aren't biased to who they infect or what the conditions are.. be it that he's not in a glass aquarium or not, the cham can still get a resp. infection.

one of the most important factor for URI to develop is the humidity.
Either your cage is too humid or not humid enough (for Jackson, i would suspect this).

Okay guys I think people are jumping to some pretty extensive conclusions with very little information. There is a sticky at the top of the "Health Clinic" section that shows how to ask for help in an event like this. I would suggest following that so that you can get some help.

Chameleons will also open their mouth if they are basking and are to hot. This allows the saliva to evaporate into the incoming air thus cooling the core and the chameleon itself. Some jacksons can take decent amounts of heat other can not. I have heard that some people keep their basking spots from 85-90*F, mine would be opening his mouth at that point to cool off. If it was to hot it could be why he was on the ground in the first place.

Not saying that it is not a URI but more information is need before sending some to a vet who just may have needed some enviroment corrections.

Exactly the point of us saying Humitity problem. Therefore they should change it.

To little humidity could also cause irratation in the respitory system leading to an URI. THat is why I am saying more information is need.

Perhaps there is an existing thread from the orginal poster I am unaware of I just read through this and wondered how it got so far off of not much.

Well if you know a lot about them you can take the information and make a guess. No one is saying that thier answer is correct. It is just a forum, not an actual vet office

The reason I went with the uri is because he stated that the animal was very weak with the gaping mouth..very weak is why I stated that he needed to see a vet right away. If he had said it was acting normal except for gaping and staying at the bottom, I would have thought it was a heating problem. More info would have been nice but any cham that is acting like this should be taken to vet right away IMHO. Thanks, and I hope he keeps us posted. David

Lol, I think you have every reason to make that guess
