Help needed figuring out colors/patterns!

Okay, so we thought the flap-necked was what we were leaning towards, but now my husband is contemplating leaning more towards a carpet cham (previously his #2 choice) due to concerns about the potential for colors/patterns. I personally like that the flap-necks seem to be prone to less fancy colors and patterns, but my husband is worried that we could end up with a chameleon that's just a basic plain green with very little color variation. My question is, how do you really know what kinds of patterns/colors your cham will develop as they mature? Is it kind of a craps shoot? I know that the colors will vary based on environment, mood, temperature, etc., but how do you know which colors your cham will have? Do they all have the potential to have the various range of colors your see online? The flap-necked chams we've looked at online range anywhere from brown to yellowish to green but some definitely have more distinctive patterns than others. Do they all have the same potential to have these great patterns/colors or will each cham be limited to it's own combos (for examplie, can all flap-necked turn brown/yellowish/green or can some only turn from green to brown?). Same deal with the carpets. Do they all have the ability to turn the more distinctive shades (with dark red, blue or yellow markings), or do some only keep more muted colors? Sorry for the long and rambling post. Still new to all of this and trying to be as informed as possible before we take the leap to chameleon ownership.
