Hi,

I having trouble trying to decide if my cham is a red bar ambilobe or blue bar. the man in the reptile shop who sold him to my wife said he is 100% a blue bar but im not convinced. is it possible for blue bars to have very little blue and lots of red? I think im gonna need an expert opinion on this guys although all comments are welcome.:D

I want to get a female in the next few weeks for him but dont wanna get the wrong locale.

Also, is there any way to tell how old an adult cham is? im told he is 2 years old but for some reason im starting to doubt some of the things the guy in the shop tells me. I have an Ankaramy thats meant to be the same age too. hes going through a shed, is it normal for aduts to shed their skin? I thought they shed as the skin grows tighter when they are getting bigger and older.

They continue to grow all their lives and will shed occationally as adults. Does that chameleon fire up with blue bars? Sometimes a baby from a blue bar pair will end up with red bars (which isn't bad) but either way, an ambilobe is an ambilobe IMO. Red bars or blue or even a mix doesn't mean the animal is a different locale, just that it has different bar colors.

he fires up bright yellow with bright red stripes. Im sure hes a RB but the guy my wife bought him from for me insists he is a BB. it doesnt matter to me either way, i just want to get a female that will be compatible and like to keep their colours how theyre meant to be ( blue or red bars ) and not a mix of the 2 as ive seen purple bars come from a BB male a RB female. im more inclined to get a RB female at the moment. The guy in the shop will be buying the babies at half the price seeing as i will struggle to sell them all and as i will be breeding my Ankaramy too so i think i may have to get BB to keep him happy! Im not in it for the money, I just want the satisfaction of knowing im doing my bit for conservation as the more CB chameleons out there the less hunting in Madigascar IMO.

Purple bars a very uncommon. Even if you got a red bar female, there is a chance that some (or even most) of the babies will be blue bars. It just depends on the genetics.
