Help correcting supplementation schedule

Okay so I have a 7-8 month old male Ambilobe panther chameleon. When I first got him the breeder I bought him from advised that I should supplement with calcium w/ D3 3x a week and reptivite w/ D3 once a week. This is because I can't expose him to natural sunglight often. Is this correct or have I been decevied? If not please help me with a proper supplementation schedule.

Hi there! That sounds like way too much d3. My chameleon doesn't get sun either but that doesn't mean you need to use all that d3, just means you need to have a UVB bulb in its enclosure. Do you have a UVB source?

This forum recommends plain calcium without d3 every feeding, calcium with d3 twice a month and multivitamin with no d3 twice a month.

Too much d3 and multivitamin can be as bad as not enough.

Another alternative is repashy calcium plus at every feeding but you would need to do a little research in that to make sure it ties in with your feeders and gutloads.

That doesn't sound correct to me.

You can chose to use separate supplements, or one supplement. Here's the schedule I use (separate supplements):

-Calcium NO D3 every feeding (Rep-Cal brand)
-Calcium WITH D3 twice a month (Rep-Cal brand)
-Multivitamin (Herptivite) twice a month (Rep-Cal brand)

OR you can use Repahsy's "Calcium Plus", which is a combination of everything. You usually give this 3-4 times a week.

yeah way too much D3! I myself use plain calcium every feeding, calcium w/D3 twice a month, and a multivitamin once a month. But it also depends on your gutloading and how much natural sun he gets. Check out sandrachameleon's blogs, you will find lots of information there!

That really irritates me because it happens to be one of the site sponsers I purchased him from who advised the supplementation I described. Yes I have a reptisun 5.0 uvb tube. So now I'm off to order some calcium w/o D3 since no stores around carry it. I'm so mad about this it's not even funny. You would think spending over $1,000 of my hard earned money as a 1st time buyer through them that the breeder could of atleast told me the truth! I won't be doing business with them again. Thanks for the quick responses and help everyone.

That's such a shame! So often people are misinformed about important things like this. Do you know if that's how they were supplementing him?

Yeah, I had to switch too when I first started. It sucks, but it's worth the extra $25.

Sorry to jump onto this thead but I too have a question regarding supplementation. I have a Jackson's Chameleon and I know that Jackson's require less supplementation than Veiled and Panthers. But when i run searches on the forum i see a variety of supplementation schedules for Jackson's.

Can someone give me a definitive schedule i should follow?

This is the one i was planning to do.
-Calcium NO D3 twice a week
-Calcium WITH D3 twice a month
-Multivitamin once every 2 months

@ AngieL: Yeah and it's ridiculous I can't say anything on this forum about them directly because it's considered bashing even though it's not it's the ugly truth. I don't know and I probably never will because he was willing to answer my questions when I was interested in making a purchase but after he ignored my phone calls and emails.

@ Swayne8998: I hear you there no price tag matters when it comes to taking care of my little buddy. Repti-calcium w/o D3 $7.99, shipping $8.99 seems almost fair right? Haha

you may find these links useful for determing what is best for your particular situation (there is no single answer/schedule that fits all situations)
https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/65-supplements.html
https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/174-whats-supplements-brand.html

Note that Repitivite has Vitamin D3 10,400 I.U per lb (for comparison, Repashy calicum plus as min. 20,000 IU Vitamin D per lb)
So in most indoor cases, Reptivite can be used twice weekly, but you likely wouldnt want to add another D3 containing product.

It depends on the BRAND (potetency) of the supplement you are using, as well as how you gutload, etc
D3 and other vitamins may only be needed once a month.

This is a good resource for jackson keepers:

For Jackson info I would ask this person https://www.chameleonforums.com/members/action-jackson/ or this person https://www.chameleonforums.com/members/xanthoman/ :)
