Help! burns?

his casque looks fine.

If you are talking about the black coloring, its normal.

and the skin on the casque is normally alot thicker than the rest.

Orion looks fine. Sometimes when the shed it can look strange, but I didn't see a problem. You will find all of us who a cham keepers worry, it is just part of our creatures.

Thank you for reply's, altho they are comforting i still worry.

He has grown not to be a fan of photo shoots so i tried to take one more for a closer inspection, if you zoom his casque in, the top of it seems like a clean cut ( necrotic flesh falling off? ) I am now also panicking about the front of his casque, could the darkness indicate a burn or necrotic flesh?

He is 9 months old now and has been in my care since he was 3 weeks old, also my first reptile ever.

It is winter and he was probably reaching higher towards the basking light, the bulb is not in his enclosure and was not touching the mesh, but probably was too close non the less. I have raised it more today when i noticed this happening.

I overlooked this whole scenario and this is clearly my fault, not looking for excuses but I still feel very sad about the whole thing.

Actually his casque was probably burned at some point (or maybe it was rubbing against the top of his cage or furnishings) and that black shed piece is the dead skin and bone sloughing off. His casque should naturally come up to a rounded point. It is nicely healed now however so nothing to worry about. It gives him character.

Unfortunately I see this alot. With the casque being so tall and being closer to the basking light it gets burned much faster than the rest of the body. Ferret or Dr.O can explain the physiology in reptiles better than I can but basically the pain receptors are lower in the skin layer so it takes a chameleon longer to realize it is getting burned and to move away from the heat source.

He is a handsome Veiled. Enjoy him!
