Help!!! Blind??

Hi, I have a 7 or 8 inch male veiled. Ever since I got him he has had eye problems. He would always rub his right eye till pus came out and he kept is closed all the time. The right eye was fine. He could barely see out of it. But this morning I found him and he sat in the same place and didnt notice my hand( he usually flinches) and he didnt even look at the food. Before he was like this he was eating very well and drank A LOT. Now he doesnt drink. Does anyone know how to save him? Also his left eye still looks normal and moves around. Only thing: sometimes in his eyes I see a white film covering his eye.

Pus coming out of his eye is a clear indication of an infection. Did you ever take him to a vet to get him checked out or had antibiotics subscribed?

It might not be to late to help him, but you need to get him to a vet asap before lasting damage can be done.

Please fill out the information below to get the best help. Also I would recommend taking him to the vet immediately! It sounds like this has been an ongoing problem so I think it's your best option.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

No time to waste. Take him to the vet, dude. There isn't a get better quick for this as you don't know if the infection could have spread.

yes, as others said, he MUST see a vet, but make sure it is a CHAMELEON vet - most dog/cat vets mean well, but are clueless on chams - not sure where you are located, but there is a vet thread to some of the vets in the different states

You can flush his eye with sterile saline solution or give him a long (20-30 min) indirect misting (mist falling gently over him, not sprayed directly at him). This may ease the symptoms and give him a little relief, but he likely has an infection. It won't go away without proper medicine from a vet. You will want to deal with this immediately to avoid any further damage to the eyes! My chameleon went blind in one eye over time (vet said degenerative disorder, not infection). It is a lot more work to deal with a blind or half blind chameleon and also a struggle for the cham itself.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male veiled a couple months old. In my care for about a month.
Handling - Almost once a day.
Feeding - I feed crickets gut loaded with flukers orange cubes, outside bugs including mosquitos, butterflys, flys, etc. He gets about 5-10 bugs daily.
Supplements - I use fluker orange cubes on the crickets constantly.
Watering - I mist the cage and the drops accumulate on the glass. Then he drinks all of it off until I need to mist the wall again. Misting about twice a day for as long as he likes until he stops drinking.
Fecal Description - Not tested for parasites and always healthy droppings.
History - He got seeing back to his left eye again today and ate and moved but consistently rubs right eye.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Glass 18 * 18 * 24. Getting a screened one as soon as I can.
Lighting - Brand; reptisun. type; long strip bulb 18'. 12- 14 hr day light and no night lighting.
Plants - No.
Placement - On a counter in study. 3-4 feet in the air.
Location - SW Florida.



As to seeing a vet, I will try next time I go out to naples this week.

I see you are planning to upgrade to a screen cage. That will be a good thing, but in the mean time I think there may be some other issues with your setup and care. Please take a look at this link to the Veiled care sheet.

You may be underfeeding him for his age. If he's really only a few months old he may need more food. Also, the Flukers orange cubes are not a very nutritious gutload. Look into Repashy Bug Burger or Cricket Crack as well as fresh veggies and fruits. He may not be getting enough nutrition from the food. Also, do you use supplements? He will need calcium and vitamin supplements as outlined in the care sheet. Also, what are your temperatures? Proper temperatures will help him fight off infection (although he still will need antibiotics from the vet). Hope the care sheet can help you.

Yes, thanks. I will get different gut loading stuff. Thanks for the advice. I will give him more food. Some days I feed him more stuff bc we happen to catch a lot of dragonflys which are pretty big and he loves them. I will look at the care sheet but I have an adult female that I have owned for a while now(since she was like 6" and she has done very well.

When you click on Reply to Thread, there's a paperclip button. Click on it, and an uploader screen will pop up. Then you can choose which pictures from your computer you want to upload. After you upload them, you click on the paper clip again to manage the files, and put them in the reply.

This is something you do in your user profile...basically you create a "signature" that will show up at the bottom of all your posts.

Here is the left eye. He cant see with it every morning(I know cause we tested).


Here is the right eye. He likes to keep it closed mostly, rub it, and it has white in it(if you look closely).
