Hello I have some sad news and a few questions

We had a beautiful Veiled Chameleon named Bella. We bought her in November so she was about 9 to 10 months old. I had her in a screen cage about 4 ft high 2 feet deep and 3 feet wide. She was very healthy and colorful. I went to water and feed her two days ago and I found her at the bottom of her cage on her side with her claws stuck to the screen. I am wondering what could have caused this. I think she may have fallen however this surprizes me because I have never seen her loose her balance. He color was still bright green I do not know what happened and my boyfriend is really upset. I am woundering if we did something wrong of if it was something we couldnt help. If it was out of my hands I want to buy him a full grown veiled. We have 2 Jacksons and they are perfectly fine.We never really handled her just when cleaning her cage. Feed daily if not twice a day. Crickets wax worms and meal worms. We used a spray bottle for water 4 times a day.

I'm so sorry! I'm not sure what could have caused it, I'm kind of a newbie at chams, but here is some info for you to fill out so others more experienced can help you :

How to ask for help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information, you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Hi there! Filling out the form is a great idea! I would also like to ask some questions specific to female care if I may? So many people are not aware that females require slightly different husbandry.

Did she have a laying bin available at all times to lay her infertile clutches?

Had she laid any eggs recently?

Thanks, Angie :)

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

Hello, welcome to the forum. I am really sorry you lost Bella. I have no idea what happened, but i have a couple hints. If you keep a female veiled too warm they will most likely have infertile eggs. Most people just feed an adult female every other day. Even then only 3 or 4 food items per day. You need to have a laying bin in the cage from about the time they hit 7 months old. She very well may had died from being egg bound.

If it were me I would just fill out the form if want us to look at how you had everything set up. Since you had no problems with your veilded for a good while, and none with your jacksons, something must be working, but maybe we can offer some advice.

Again I am very sorry you lost Bella.

My condolences. This must be rough and incredibly frustrating for you. Hopefully you can find the answers to seek here within the support of this community.

sorry for your loss im gonna guess she had infertile eggs and got egg bound did she look plump? go to the bottom of her cage a lot? did you have a laying bin?

Bella

Honestly I did not have a bin for her to lay eggs. I was told that she would lay then in the potted plant that I had in her tank if she needed to. And this was from the reptile "specialist" at Petsmart. Grrr. She never left the top of the cage and she was not and "fatter" than she usually was. I kept her tank between 75F and basking spot of about 87F. I feel so bad if this was the cause of her death. She was our baby! And so far my Jacksons are still doing great. They had 11 babies 2 1/2 months ago and we only have 2 that have survived so far. I take extra good care of my reptiles and it just breaks my heart. :(

Oh no!! I am so sorry for your bad luck!! :(

I know baby jacksons are tricky to keep alive, but you have only a few left out of 11!!??

How large was the potted plant in Bella's cage?

Don't feel bad! It's not your fault you were misinformed by a trusted source! I see it all the time on here and had the same when we got our girl. The stores give bad advice, and my local store was no different :(we had to find this forum before we knew we were doing some things wrong.

She may not have had eggs, that's just one of the main complications females can have. If you want you can fill out the form and the members here might be able to tell you if it was likely an egg problem.

Sincere Condolences

So sorry for your lost. I have a 4 month Panther Chameleon (think nosey bes) that I have for 1 month. I would be devastated like you, if I lost him. If you have any suggestions for me I would really appreciate it. I cant imagine losing him and am so very very sorry for you.
