Heating and Temperature/Humidity in Bethesda, Maryland

I live in Bethesda, Maryland and for the summer,

What is a good temperature for a baby male veiled chameleon's cage to be?

What humidity level should I keep the cage at?

Is a 40 watt blue heat daylight bulb good enough for a baby male veiled chameleon in the summer?

The average Maryland Summer Temp is in the Mid-Upper 80s
My room is usually 40 humidity in the summer and 80 degrees Fahrenheit
Nighttime is usually 74 degrees in the summer

I have a Vicks Vaporizer to let out steam to provide more humidity If I should use it

Are there supposed to be any lights at all turned on at night?

Greatings neighbor, I live in College Park ;)

I use a basking temp at 85F and the rest of the cage has a wide veriety of temps since its roomy (18 x 18 x 36).

NO NIGHTLIGHT! get rid of that. They need darkness so their sleep is not disturbed (like us!!)

You can get one of those clamp-on lamp dome things and use a 50 to 60W regular incan bulb for basking. They require only the warmth from it to raise their body temp.

Most important is a UVB tube style, 5% with a fixture.
Everyone recommends Reptisun 5.0 UVB's but I have converted to Arcadia bulbs and fixture because they are way higher quality and the UV output is higher and more stable (I use a uv meter).

Other then that, you will find all your answers just by lurking the forum ;)

Hey Psychobunny

Remember you told me to get these things. I ordered the 2nd and the third ones plus a 40 watt blue daytime heat bulb. I already had the fixture for the heat bulb. What about humidity though? Should I keep and use the vaporizer to increase the humidity?

You told me:

I am trying to get everything right so that I don't have the chameleon that I had before. (She had way too much calcium)

sorry to be off topic but i didn't know you guys were dc metro neighbors! i'm in springfield va. i was joking around w/ camimom on the forum (she's in md) that we should get a dc metro cham group/meeting going. :):):)

Frederick here. It is hot as hell today

Cham lovers of MD, VA and DC unite!! ;)

But really, lets not hi-jack the poor guy's thread ;)

And yes, I do use a cool mist humidifier, one for each cage, with the nozzle right up againts the screen.
For my Jacksons, I have his on full blast, clouds of cool mist, he LOVES it!!
He will park his butt in front of it and stay there until it's time to raise his body temp in the basking light. :)

Cheap-O Walmart units with front mounted mist exhaust is fine

P.S. use DISTILLED WATER ONLY!!

Yes, and if you are going to be away all day at work or school, make a dripper to drip during the day, esp if your room temps go up in the afternoon.
They are extremely easy to make or u can buy a "Big Dripper" (yikes!! something ELSE to buy!!?? no one said this will be cheap!)

For a veiled...
Humidity - 40-60% Daytime; 80% plus at night.
Temp - 70's (ambient), high 80's to low 90's (basking), low to mid 60's (nighttime)

As psychobunny said... NO night lights!!
