Heater and Light amount?

Hi everyone!

Somone suggested, that i take a ceramic heater, and keep it on all the time in one corner of the cage, and then take a uvb light and have that on for 10-12 hours a day.

or,

would it be better to have a light with uvb emission that also acts as a heater, and so when the light goes off, so does the heat?

can someone with more experience give me some pointers? thanks!

Firstly, what sort of cham do you intend keeping, and how old is it?

For most chams (except pygmies), the best set-up is to have separate heat and UV lights. Don't use ceramic heaters for chameleons. Chameleons respond to the visible light frequencies (like the sun) for heat, so they may not recognise the ceramic element as a heat source.

For your heat bulb, any regular incandescent spot globe will work.
For a UV light get a flourescent tube light made by a reputable supplier like Zoomed. Don't bother with compact flourescents or combined heat/UV bulbs.

I would just add that it is a little more natural for the temperature to drop at night for chameleons. Most houses will not drop into dangerous temperatures unless you live in an extreme climate or the power goes off in winter. So normally night time heating is nothing to worry about.
