I think I posted a similar topic like this before but I only got one reply.
My veiled chameleon goes dark under his basking spot but bright when eating...drinking...and sleeping or when ive got him out. Almost all other times hes pretty dark...is that normal?

most chameleons will turn darker while basking, I've certainly noticed it with all of mine. I believe it's to absorb heat better. I wouldn't be concerned :)

Darker colors absorb light better, as does more surface area....both are common for soaking up the "rays." My little guy has black bars when basking, sometimes he even leans sideways to get that extra amount of heat/energy into his system.
