Graceful not eating.

I just got a graceful chameleon, and he hasn't ate from what I seen , I saw him go to a cricket and put his toungue to it , but it seems like he can't catch it. I have fed him a couple from my hand. So I just bought some meal worms for him but he hasn't looked at them yet. He's drinking a lot from the leaves and he likes it when I squirt water into his mouth. I'm just worried because I haven't seen his toungue extens or anything. I only had him for a day now. About how much do should they eat in a day?

Hello!

Welcome to Chameleon Forums!

Glad you have came here for information. :)

I have no experience with graceful chameleons myself.

Does he shoot the tongue out at all? Or is it more of him licking the feeder?

Can you post pictures of the animal please?

It's more of a lick from what I've seen . And the cricket just hops awAy. I was able to feed him 3 by hand though so he's eating, I just don't know if he can eat himself.

Welcome to the forum!

What's the basking temperature?

Does the tongue miss the insect? Not stick to it?

Please don't squirt water into its mouth...it may aspirate it. You can drip it at the rate of one or two drips per second on the end of its nose to allow it to drink.

Please fill out the questions in the "how to ask for help" thread at the top of the health forum so we can check your setup.

The temp is 77 degrees.

He hit it but It didn't stick. He watches it and fallows like he is hunting.

And thanks for the tip with the water I'm glad I found that out.

Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information, you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?

Rango is a graceful chameleon, he is a male. I am not sure of his age, but he is approximately 6" long. I have had Rango for 36 hours.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?

I have not handled him much since I got him except for setting up his habitat. I hear that they don't like to be disturbed.

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?

So far I have hand fed him 3 crickets, it seems like he could not catch them, and that was today around noon. I also just purchased some meal worms today, but he didn't really notice them when I put them in his habitat. I do not know about gut- loading, I just bought the insects from the pet store.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?

I didn't know about this either. I read somewhere that giving them that stuff isn't necessary.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?

I have been using a spray bottle to mist with. I mist the leaves on his cage and on him. He came to the screen and liked to be sprayed in his mouth, as I just learned is not a good thing to do, I have misted him twice already today and will again before I go to bed. Ringo loves to drink water, I watched him drink water off the leaves.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? Tiny brown spec like. And I believe he's been tested I got him from a reptile expo.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Screen cage 20x16x16

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? Repti glow 13watt UVB light, 100 watt basking light and for night a 75 watt moon light.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?

I have a thermometer in the middle of cage reading 77 I am not too sure about the floor.

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? I do not have something to measure that with. So I am not too sure on that one

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? Nope

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

The habitat is in the corner of the living room, it is not a high traffic area. The top of the cage is about 5'7" from the floor, I live in long island .

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

I am concerned about his eating, I haven't seen him eat on his own with his tongue. It looked like he couldnt extend it.
