Going out of town for one night

I am going out of town overnight & I was wondering if one days worth of crickets will be ok in a small container without any food or water. My husband is not crazy about crickets but offered to take care of my 3 month old cham. Please note he over fed my 1.5 year old cham about a year ago & caused alot of health problems for the little guy. This is why I am going to put one days worth in a seperate container for him. I have a good friend that also offered to help with my cham who has reptile experience but I didn't want to hurt my husband feelings once he offered.

Why don´t you just give the crickets a piece of well-washed cucumber in their container?
But one day is no problem for them, they´ll definitely survive if you have holes to let in fresh air.

What did he overfeed them with to cause health problems???? And I'd personally recommend something a LOT more nutritious and healthy than cucumber... JMHO... Try a piece of potato or carrot as thats what they usually pack the crix with for overnight delivery... It gives proper moisture and gut load for a 24 period... Cucumber will mold and deteriorate a LOT quicker plus that amount of moisture in a small space with crix may cause a drowning or two and if one dies in a small space they give off a gas that may kill the rest... Like I said try potato or carrot, or even an apple :)

I´m not sure if it´s that important to provide something nutritious if it´s only for one night, carrots seems like too dry to me, potato however, is a good idea, that should work out well. Do you really think they may drown in cucumber?

Yes... I've had it happen... Cucumber in itself is like 90% water if I'm not mistaken... And do you not gutload the night before you feed crix to your chams?... The point of gutloading is to pack as many nutrients into the crix before they get eaten to act like a bag filled with goodies... If they are left sitting for 24 hours... They will have almost empties their guts and will ALSO have a wrong calcium to phosphorus ratio which is one reason we gutload crix to begin with

Yes, i do gutload with carrots, cucumber, apple etc. but if it´s only for one feeding and it´s most about keeping the crickets alive, i guess it won´t do any harm if they´re not gutloaded that much.
I myself do in most cases feed insects vegetables and fruits several days/weeks before i actually feed them to my cham.

i used to hate using potato for my crix just for the fact that everytime ive seen the worst gutloads, it was always with a half rotten potato..but after looking through all the nutrition facts..they really are a good thing to add to a complete gutload..a small slice of a fresh idaho potato will work good..

some facts:

Potassium mg/ daily value % Daily Value Vitamin C %

Potato 620mg/18% 45%
Banana 400mg/11% 15%
Onion 240mg/7% 20%
Apple 170mg/5% 8%

THE CRICKETS!!!!! Who cares about the crickets! Deal with whatever has you making accusations about your own husband before you worry about some crickets.

If you think there will be anything wrong with your CRICKETS because you are going away OVER ONE NIGHT then you are just the type of person who would wrongly accuse your husband of doing something bad to your chameleon. If you do not know that you cham and the crickets can go a WEEK without eating than it is likely that YOU overfed your chams.

There is almost no chance that your husband caused your cham to have health problems. How do you know this to be the case? Even if he did you are lucky to have a spouse that tolerates reptiles at all and there is no need to gossip about your own husband on a the internet.

That absurdity aside, just do a search for cup feeding.

It could probably go 2 weeks. This thread is absurd. And you and the OP are totally paranoid.

Right, it could but it would absolutely not be good for him
One or two two days would not be dramatic, but it´s better to feed them every day while they´re that young and one week without food would be absolutely not okay.

@Lumbasammler though we usually disagree I will say I agree with you here...

@Seeco why would it be absurd to worry after a week? A cham that age is going through huge growth spurts and though it CAN it is by NO MEANS a good thing?? YOU can go 13 days without food... Is that good for you?? What is absurd is your calling someone paranoid for worrying about their cham... I don't like the way this thread has gone towards the OP... We are here to give CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, not insult people. My cham hadn't eaten in a week due to a small issue, after a week he was visibly weaker, wasn't basking and was not showing color... I was one day away from a vet until I figured out the issue and now he is fine... So what you are telling me is that had NOTHING to do with the fact that he had no food and that it was totally okay... B.T.W........ He is exactly three months old... Please try to be more constructive

No man this person is worrying about the CRIX and going away for ONE NIGT. The whole week thing was my suggestion just to get the point across.

An owner's stress level and quality of life has a direct bearing upon their pets' quality of life. This person is freaking out about not feeding some crickets AND making accusations about her own husband. This is a recipe for disaster for the chameleons. Some people really do need to be told to chill out.

First of all I am not gossiping about my husband. He does not like crickets or bugs of any kind. With that being said he did not want me to get a new cham because of the crickets being in the house. He accidently over fed my adult cham large crickets about a year ago. The crickets bit my cham & he got cellulitis. Later he developed gout that may or may not have been caused by the overfeed. Necropsy results did not rule that out.

I just want what is best for my little cham & his crickets. My husband offered to watch him & I am grateful for that. I just want the "Bug" experience to be as less tramatic for my husband as posible also.

Gotcha... I actually had the same question regarding exactly HOW the husband caused health problems... I agree that a stress level is equal between owners and pets to an extent I just worry about how newer members take to the amount of fingers we point when we see something wrong... I have to admit, being a newer member myself I felt rather discouraged a few times because of some posts I just don't want to see that again because this truly is the best place to gain information and if we push people away that cham may end up in big trouble down the road..

WRONG. The chameleon is only 3 months old and must be fed every single day.
You also called me paranoid for saying that a chameleon of this age shoul be fed every day, and i guess i made clear that my statement refers to the chameleon as you can see aboth.
The OP was just worried if her cham will be alright so she asked a question and it´s no good idea to be that straight for otherwise she may not ask the next time she has any worry which may harm her chameleon.
Please be more sensitive.
@ sean: i don´t think we disagree often, mostly we are quite close but can´t really admit it :D

I have pretty tough skin about most posts but I don't like when people who don't know me make comments about my relationship with my husband. Back to the crickets.... they should be ok is what I have gathered. I thought about putting a little cricket crack & sweet potato in container. My husband will just dump them into cage food & all. Thanks for all your thoughts (really)

????? I wasn't insinuating anything... I was merely asking the parameters of his health problems and what was thought to be the cause.... The issue is if you were pointing the finger in the wrong direction those problems could have been caused by an issue that may return due to a COMPLETELY different scenario.... Nobody is commenting on your relationship???
