I am hatching a lot of reptile eggs, and small white gnat larvae about half the size of a Phoenix worm always find their way to the eggs that go bad. I've rinsed a few through cheesecloth and used them as feeders for a test hatchling, but they drown really easily. I don't feel like pulling them right out of decomposing egg is ideal, but no matter the water temperature, if they are submerged any period of time they die. I've given a ton to one hatchling who likes to hunt from a cup; tiny meal-worm dish in this case. His growth is right up there with the biggest siblings who are being fed conventional foods, and so far no negative results. The only problem is cleaning them and keeping them alive. My only ideas are a fine mesh to separate the sphagnum and vermiculite that cling to them. Also, they desiccate if I let the media dry enough to try and separate it from them. Anyone tried this? Any tips for getting them somewhat clean?
