Getting my first shipment of bugs today

I'm getting dubias and silkies. I'm a little worried about the gross factor of the roaches but excited to be getting going with some colonies. I'll pick up some supers too, and get those started in little paper cups.

I guess I need plastic tubs and screen, pronto!

Damm, i guess i shoulda asked b4 i bought! I thought for sure that when the superworm breeding text called for dixie cups, that they meant plastic! I figured they could chew their way through paper, so i bought plastic, even though the lids were meant for paper. My supers will be here tomorrow, along with 1000 crickets

Hmm. I just assumed the super tiny bathroom cups would be best. I'm not sure if that's right. Maybe it doesn't matter?

I set mine up a few hours ago and just checked, no escapees yet. I will let you know if they get out.

Good luck with your bugs. My cham put away 7 silkies today, I guess he likes them!

Congrats! It's always exciting to get that first number of roaches, and have yet another icky insect species to acomodate in your home I have my own batch crawling away in the next room.

Only tip I can give you is to provide the largest amount of ventilation possible. I've tried drilling big holes (3/4 inch) all over the lid and I still have a humidity problem in my insect bins as soon as it gets warm in the house. I'm about to cut out the entire center of the lids and cover it with mesh instead.

Black plastic film canisters worked great for me when I was breeding them. Just give them a good washing with dish soap and a few rinse's. Poke a few small holes in the lid and your all set.

Olimpia- I experienced the moisture issue with the small amount of superworms I bought. They kept getting smelly and their substrate a little mushy. Yuck. I spent yesterday afternoon on bugs. LOL. I got a huge roll of fiberglass mesh at the hardware store for less than $5 and cut out squares on all my bug bin lids. I tried a hot knife tool on the lids but that was just smelly and messy. An exacto knife was much better. A little hot glue and it was all set.

Carl- Where do you find film canisters? I wish I had kept my old ones. I replicated that as best I could with the small Dixie cups. I secured a piece of paper towel on top with a rubberband and put it in a dark box. I hope it works!

just so you know, u cant use fibreglass on crickets, they will eat through it
