One week away from getting my new puppy! Kaiser will be 10 weeks old, and I am SO ready to get him! He is a Giant Schnauzer :) Any puppy tips for a new owner? (I have had dogs before, but never while working night shift) I am so excited to have a running buddy!

I knew some one with a giant schnauzer they are bundle of fun. The owner told me he got in to everything but his was a year old and had just started training with it. :/ All i can suggest (I do this with my Great Dane) kennel train it and try to teach it or work on a trick like everyday. You also might want to look in to a partial B.A.R.F. diet to help with any hip or growth issues. Lol feel like im rambling on. If theres is a Costco near you they sell a bag of grain free dog food that is 35 lbs for 30 bucks which is a great deal and a great food for all dogs. Hope that helps ya with your new addition some. :D

Thank you! We are getting him 4Health dog-food, it is a 4 star rating that TSC sells for only $27.99 for a 35lbs bag! High ratings, good ingredients, looks great! :)

I have heard good thing about that food its just the same price as the costco food down here :/. Let me know if you have any big breed questions I am more than happy to share any info I have with ya. :D

As a past terrier owner to a soon-to-be terrier owner, this is the only piece of advice I have for you: NEVER BACK DOWN, NEVER SURRENDER!
These breeds can be very stubborn because they're too smart for their own good, so when it comes down to anything, never give in! They'll never let you off the hook afterwards. My family has had several terrier breeds and when I had the chance to get my own dog I steered clear of them and went for a much easier to live with shepherd breed lol.

You got it all right! I have a Kerry Blue Terrier and he's tireless...and he is 13!

He is SO sweet! We are working on potty training and stopping barking while in the crate, but he is a doll, and loves everyone! He is scared of other dogs, but he is beginning puppy classes soon. Vet thinks he will reach 70lbs!

I crate trained mine. It is great. Oscar is now 2 years old and still regards his crate as his bedroom and can't wait to go to bed at night. Congrats on your new baby.:)

Start brushing early! That dog will need to get groomed for the rest of it's life! Once it gets used to it as a puppy, it'll make the groomers life and dogs life much stress free. It must get used to getting it's paws and face groomed. Invest in a good slicker brush. A bristle brush would be useless for his type of coat.

Unless you're really comfortable training your dog. Take it to obedience class young. Training is a MUST for these dogs (well all dogs need it). Never use classes as a last resort. I'm saying this because I'm a dog trainer (not actively teaching anymore) People usually wait too long and dogs already develop bad habits. It's much easier to work with a blank canvas than to fix mistakes. It's also great for socialization and building a strong relationship with you and your dog. If you have dog questions, feel free to PM me. :)

The key is to make him want to go into the crate. Make it as fun as possible (treats, toys ..etc) Don't make it exciting when he comes out of the crate. Praise him when he shows any interest in the crate and bigger praise for staying in there for longer periods of time without fussing. Keep the door open so he doesn't feel forced to stay in at first then close the door, slightly increasing the time. Don't coax him when he's whinning/barking in the crate. Reward him only for being calm/quiet.

He is still not friends with his crate, but it will take time! He had a grooming appointment yesterday, and he starts puppy classes Sunday! He had a play-date with two other dogs yesterday as well. Needless to say, he was much too tired for his daily walk!

That's good to hear! I don't know about the area you live in but be careful of parvo and distemper when you're walking him in your neighborhood. Puppes that started their series can still get sick.
