Getting a K. multituberculata

Ever since I got into chameleons I have wanted one (maybe more) of these. I've finally decided to take the plunge!

I'm getting a baby so I am playing around with my cage setup. Since my baby will be eating fruit flies I have decided to put the new cham in a butterlfy cage(12" x 12" x 12"). I've also decided to utilize my misting system by placing the butterfly cage inside of a screen cage.

The temp reading in the upper left side of the cage is 80 degrees.

What do you think so far?

Looks good! There is one thing though, I would be concerned about your UVB light breaching both the screen cage and the butterfly cage. The loss of UVB through just a screen cage is already considerable, and with the addition of the mesh of the butterfly cage id be worried about almost nothing getting down through...

It may be better just to try to close the gaps on the screen cage to prevent ff from getting out

Hmmm, good point about the UVB light. The ff will be able to get through the mesh screen, not just the gaps.

I will have to re-think the UVB thing, ack. Good thing I won't be getting my baby for another month!
 
D. hydei shouldnt be able to get through the screen, and the multi should not be small enough to require melanogasters...

Maybe Ive just had monster hydei lol but Ive never had trouble with them actually getting through the screen...

Really? Maybe I'll try just using the big cage. My hydei look like they can fit through. I'll have to experiment.

My hydei just waltz though my screens and don't even stop to say hi. Nasty little buggers. That is why I started using the butterfly cages. Open your cage door on the screen cage sit the butterfly cage into the open door. Arrange the mister head to spray the butterfly cage. Put the uvb across the open cage door. Now the uvb only goes past the butterfly mesh. Problem solved.
 
I kept my K multi in a small Reptibreeze. (i dont suggest using reptibreeze though. I dont like the cages..) And had no problems with the FF getting out. One thing i noticed about mine, they eat QUICK!! those thigns were not in there for more than 2 minutes before they were all gone. I cant remember what FF i had.. I got them form Seeco. They could fly though ??

I'd suggest getting a small screen cage and going that route.
 
You will love the species! I never had problems with the FFs getting out. House flies would be another good option. They are super small. Once you are comfortable none of the food can escape the cage the youngin should have no problem finding its food in the screen cage. The species is super active! I would recommend the biggest cage you can deal with when it gets older. Although not a super large cham they are super active and will use all the room they can get!
 
Ok, so I guess I'll have to scratch the butterfly cage idea :( I want to be sure that my little one gets enough UVB.

I don't want to get another cage since I already have one, I guess I will just have ff walking in and out of the cage! The kind I have do not fly. I also have a friend that has houseflies so I can get some of those too.
 
one thing i've noticed with cage I showed you is only the LARGEST of the fruit flies won't fit through the screen.
I got a couple of cultures started so I can hand pick fat ones and not mess with the breeding process.

I've got hydei they are supposed to be the largest fruit flies (unless there are others I don't know about). I am pretty sure that they can fit through though, I have this type of cage http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog...ges/-/16-x-15-x-20-inch-aluminum-screen-cage/
 
If you dust the ff n a cup n cup feed.....they tend to stay within the cup n along its edges....some will wander around but not as much

It is a 16" x 15" x 20". Yes I am getting a young one. I have a bigger cage ready for when it grows up a bit.
 
I would suggest getting a package of the fake vine(72") that LLL sells and draping it over the sticks......This is a shy species and being that open on what you have might cause your cham to stay within the foliage when your admiring its Kinyongia greatness......Ill try to find an old pic of some of my multi cages I had a few years ago if ur interested.......overall though, very cool cage deco u got goin.......your gonna love this species!!!!
