Gave Reptar a bath, confused on behavior/colors.

Hey, I just said MIGHT and POSSIBLY for a reason. Never made any statements about how it FOR SURE was in pain.

You went on and on about it. And made the OP feel that he could have harmed his cham without even knowing all the facts. You started saying how just because the cham closed its eyes it was prob in pain. When if youve had chams and given them showers Im sure youve seen one sit under the water with its eyes closed and just soak and enjoy the water cleaning its eyes and such...

My jackson's LOVES warm water. In the begining I used to shower him in room temp water and he hated it, he wouldn't stay still and enjoy the shower. But when I switched to using hot water (so it sprayed out warm) it was like night and day. Suddenly he'd lean into the stream, point his face at it, close his eyes, drink, and then enjoy the water for a good 15 more minutes.

When I used to have geckos I remember we used to give them baths (for stuck shed or pooping issues) in water no warmer than their hot spot temp. So around 80-85*. It makes sense that if they can handle their hot temps under a basking light, then a 10 minute bath in the same temp shouldn't make much difference.

OP, I wouldn't give your Jax any more baths like that, but instead do long showers. It works just as well as a bath but your cham has the option of leaving the stream if he wants to, for one reason or another. However, mine would sit under the warm shower all day if I let him! :D

No, mine don't sit under the water with their eyes closed.

Why would it close it's eyes when it was in a bath? There is no water running down it's head or into it's eyes anyways. Unless it was flailing and splashing about I suppose.

I went on about hot water because of syn and elizadolots (and apparently summoner doesn't even have a jacksons?)

Hey pssh,

Sorry for the posts, I had (wrongly) assumed what Eliza had posted was correct and didn't think to look for the posts.
Didn't really think I'd have to if another established member had said it was right. Am I wrong in thinking that?
I didn't have the best night and should have went to bed, and I see that now.

I am not trying to put the blame on Eliza if that's what it seems like, simply trying to apologize for my posting and realizing that it wasn't said in the best way.

Any ways, my posts still did have some substance behind them and I hope people noticed it.

Have a good day.

No, mine don't sit under the water with their eyes closed.

So your saying your chams never sit in a shower with the water running down them with their eyes closed just enjoying the water? I find that very hard to believe if youve given your chams showers very often. As almost all of my crew love sitting under the stream with the water rushing over their heads just soaking in the warm water and rinsing their eyes and such...

Besides that your not getting the point I was trying to make. which was that you can give advice and criticism without making the poster feel that they harmed the animal. Esp since you have no way of knowing if the animal was harmed in the first place....;)

Intention wasn't to make the OP feel bad, nor was it to criticize. (well, my first post was a little strong, but still not meant to make him feel bad.) He said he was confused about the behavior. I was just giving a possible reason for why it may have acted that way. Sorry if it was wrong of me to respond to the thread that way.

None of my chameleons (nor any I have showered) enjoy sitting under the water. They prefer to sit on the dry part of the plant and drink droplets that are in such a place that they do not have to enter the water. I've never met a chameleon that seemed to enjoy getting water in it's eyes. Some tolerate it differently, but non sought it out.

All of mine (Pygmies included) willingly drink from droppers/drippers and seem to prefer it to misting. Or at least they don't run away to seek dry shelter when offered water this way. None willingly walk into the mist even when misted for many many minutes, and when allowed a dry spot, they do not leave the dry spot until misting has stopped.

No worries, all my guys/gals love to sit in the water and flush out their eyes. So I figured everyone elses must do the same type of behavor. I have one that sits under his dripper and does the same thing almost every day.

I appear to have gotten my experts confused, I'm sorry if that caused a problem, it was xanthoman not summoner.

Ultimately, everyone needs to get to know their individual chameleons. They do not all react the same to every situation.

how can you tell which colors represent ? my boyfriend vieled chameleon changes colors many times .... lol ...im new to this never heard of vieled chameleon til my boyfriend bought one :D. it's an awesome species,, but anyway sometimes he be covered with white lines in most of his back and mouth,,,, then it comes and go,,were kinda worried about it sometimes,,, i'm still learning hopefully white is okay..

well this was a fun, "bakc and forth " thread...i do know that "cantgetagoodsn" really does all he can for his jacksons, besides he only did it to remove old shed skin(i believe)...and the cham didnt look like it was in pain nor signing any gesture of stress, (wont you move around at a place thats too hot) plus i agree with texas panther...maybe just enjoyed it....

all in all "cantgetagoodsn" i dont think you have a problem, and the colors do not seem "serious" just one of those "quirky" behavior that only gets people ( novice and experienced) give "guesses and speculations"....that commonly lead to disagrements like pssh and Syn as an emample:p.....

my say in this thread.....just chill and continue enjoy your cham....if you try your best then i believe you cham is happy and healthy (with the right info of course:p).....................

he did this before the cham normally goes to bed. he looks to be preparing for exactly that. the cham looks hydrated and content but at bay to me. try different methods as you are and see what works best with your cham. personally my guy does not like hot water and will tolerate warm. seems to do well with reg room temp water. summoner is a great guy to get advice from.

haha thanks guys. I guess losing my first Jackson's when I was REALLY young from the advice of Petsmart makes me want to do everything right this time, especially since I have the means. I am also learning that since we do not 100% understand chameleons and their personalities/behavior, we will always worry from the littlest thing lol. I guess the thing to watch for is a consistent problem (I bathed him 1. for shedding purposes and 2. his urine was a little orange).

the cham didnt look like it was in pain nor signing any gesture of stress,(1) (wont you move around at a place thats too hot)(2)

the colors do not seem "serious" just one of those "quirky" behaviors

1. So you wouldn't call closing it's eyes a sign of stress?

2. Chameleons don't move away from basking lights when they are burning their backs. (People are not the same, so don't assume so.)

3. Can you prove it's just a "quirky" behavior? So you wouldn't call the triangle pattern a stress pattern?

Don't be so quick to put aside concerns that can be very real. Watch what you say, this could have potentially killed the chameleon had he only taken your advice.
