I am staying with a friend who bought a Senegal chameleon on Monday. She fed it seed moths and crickets, and had a heat lamp and a UV lamp. The chameleon was female, four to five months old. The terrarium was a home-made glass with a mesh top and painted-brown wooden frame. The size of the rerrarium is approximately 24x36x24", I think.
Water was provided via a plate, with a cup with a hole at the bottom dripping water from above. My friend does not have a mist bottle.
On Wednesday or Thursday the chameleon's left eye swelled up badly, with a dark blackish discoloration at the mouth below the swelled eye. Activity was normal and no signs of pus or other drainage were observed. The swelling went down yesterday but was still severe.
This morning we found the poor chamelon dead, partly dried out, black discoloration at the sides. She'd crawled into a corner of the terrarium.
She wants to get another one, but it's obvious she doesn't know how to care for a chameleon. She hasn't the money to get live plants or proper watering system, so I really don't know what else to tell her that might alleviate her mood. She was really broken up about the chameleon's death and doesn't understand why it died. What information can I provide her so this doesn't happen again?
