freezing greens for gutload

can collard greens be frozen? if so how long do they last? i always buy too much than needed and end up wasting most of the bunch. ill be feeding the collards to crickets and superworms, and only the fresh collards to my chameleon.

Just the leaves might not freeze the best, not sure though, haven't tried it. I throw a good size salad (w/ vitamins, etc.) into a blender, add water, grind it up, pour into ice cube trays, freeze, pop them out, put them in a big zip loc & feed as needed. :D

Ok you need to know I am the rebel with what I do.I take a lot of different stuff and make gutload then freeze it. I use cantaloupe, squash, zucchini, bee pollen, calcium (no d3), green beans, peaches, watermelon, all the greens I don't need fresh for my chameleons, and what ever other veggies & fruits. Run through the food processor into mush, add water if needed, and freeze it into ice cube trays. This makes a perfect wet gutload and both my crickets and dubious love it.

I know this won't help all your problem but at least you can use leftover greens in this way part of the time. other than that I don't know about freezing the collard greens.

Wow someone else who thinks like I do.:D

sweet, thanks guys. ive actually made a paste of greens in the past that i froze into cubes but it tends to get messy and mold quickly. i guess theres no easy way around it though!

laurie, ill have to try out that recipe. thanks for the tip! :)

Count me in this group. The ticket is to pull the crickets out to a separate container for 24 hours of deluxe eating before going to meet the chameleon. It also helps to thaw the cube on a paper towel or napkin to absorb some of the water as the ice crystal melts.

Greens should freeze fine, they will just be limp. They always freeze great when I gutload myself with them!
