3 days ago I rescued a female veiled chameleon from a patio in house here in southern Spain....it had been there for at least a month I know this because it was spotted by a friend of mine whilst she was showing the house to prospective buyers....I know we have wild ones down on the very southern tip but think this one is either an escapee or dumpee...no missing posters saaround town so prob dumpee
Ive been reading up about care etc....but want to know how its survived theres no greenery there just walls
can a captive chameleon catch its food...flies moths etc?
would it have hydrated enough from the 2 days of rain we had over the month?
She seems healthy enough and am giving her greens & water sprays 3 times a day and waiting on a delivery of crickets from UK!![hoping she is catching prey] live in a small mountain town with no pet supplies...anyone know where to get food in Spain?
Shes currently in a bird cage stuffed with branches but we are building an enclosure over weekend.
I have been putting her outside daily[in shady garden] to get some rays with temps around 28-30dgs she seems happy is this ok?
any advice for a total novice but someone who has wanted one of these for so long ...will be greatfully received.

Can you post a picture of her please?
Do you know what species she is?? If she is a C. chamaeleon its almost egglaying time, so if its a female for sure, she might need to lay eggs.

If you are caging her you are going to have to make sure you supply her some insects since she is not free to go after them herself...but I'm sure you are aware of that.

Pictures will definately help figuring a lot of things (such as if she is malnourished, deshydrated, has a few sickness, if she needs to lay eggs, etc).

Putting your chameleon outside everyday is important, since i believe you do not have any UVB lighting into your house. UVBs are essential for chameleons, so keep doing it! :)

As for food, any petstore with a few reptiles in it should have crickets and various worms that your chameleon can eat. You should check there. If you can't find any petstore with some, send me a private message and i'll try to find someone who lives in Spain as well to give you a hand. I think i have an idea.

The op said she is caging her in a bird cage and has no access to a pet store in her area. Come on people read before posting.
To the op if you cannot get crickets within a day or two. I would buy a net and go to a field where you know they dont spray pesticides. You can catch grasshoppers and dragonflies, and other stick bugs until your order of crickets arrives. If you have a bait shop in your town often they carry crickets so that may help you for the short term. Please make sure if you plan on keeping her indoors that you provide the proper flourescent uvb lighting. We generally use repti-glo 5.0 uvb bulbs. And a normal incandescent 60 watt bulb for basking. If you keep her outside make sure she gets early morning sun to warm up and afternoon shade so that she wont overheat. With lots of mistings if kept outside.

thanks

thanks for all the advice and understandng it does seem that I am doing all the right things!
just hoping the crickets come thru!if not im off hunting.will post a pic of her as soon as I figure out how to on here!
I think im right on the sex as ive looked for the identifying 'toe claw' in middle at back of hands/feet and she doesn't have one,she is changing shades happily, looks skinny but not a bag of bones to my untrained eye, sometimes she expands outwards ...is that normal?

Is its common when they feel stressed to puff up. They will fill their body with air. They also will do this before or during a fall to protect themselves. Im going hunting for my crew tonight. Trying to catch some big grasshoppers and katydids. Btw you will learn that chams love any green bugs you can catch them. Mine absolutely love any green grasshopper or katydid. You can also catch honeybees but you will need to remove the stingers before feeding them off. Put them in the refrigeraor and they will become motionless and you can pin them and remove the stingers. They are a great occasional treat.
