First time baby cham owner with a few quick questions on how to rasie them!

Chachachameleon

New Member
Here is a few questions on which id like a few answers on how ever you can answer to the best of your knowledge. Im picking up my first cham with in the next weeks, and i have done a fair share of information so im pretty sure i know what i need to know but a little extra help from all of you would be greatly appreciated!

1. Where will most chameleons poop in their cage (just curious if they usually designate a spot in the cage or do they randomly go where ever when ever)

2. Would you say chameleons have a smell to them or are they relatively clean creatures?

3. How long can you leave your cham outside of its cage? does it differ from each cham?

4. When feeding a cham (im getting a 3 month old) i am told it will eat 9-14 crickets (roughly) do you just put about 14 in the cage at the mourning or do i have to put a different amounts of crickets in the cage through out the day? (I plan on doing free range)

Thank you for reading i am lookin forward to all your helpful information. If you have any other random facts or things i should know please let me know, its greatly appreciated :D

It depends on the chameleon. They poop and pee all in one so there is no real watery urine you will see. The poop is white(urate) and black or brown. They usually do it at the same time. You may find it in different spots or the same spot for awhile and then they change where they want to go. They do not smell whatsoever. Very clean animals to keep! You can leave your chameleon out for hours if you have a safe place for it to hang out. If you are going to leave it out for very long periods then you will need to have a basking light and uvb light for them to go under. A three month old should be getting atleast 15-20 crickets a day. You can divide up the feeding between morning and afternoon. You do not want to feed at night. And try not to leave feeders running loose in the cage at night as they may nip at your sleepng chameleon. Do you know about gutloading your crickets and supplementing?? how do you plan on providing water?

Thanks for the quick response! quick question on feeding. Lets say i have a busy day to where i can only feed it once a day. can i leave all 15-20 in the morning or is that an all bad idea? and i know all about water, and gut loading But i plan on getting a drip system and i also looked into a mechanical srapyer that will spray 4-6 times a day for 15-30 seconds (i was also told to make sure all water is purified). Im getting bug burger for the gut load and plan on calcium powdering every feed. and i have read alot about making sure no crickets are left in the cage! Thanks again you have been super helpful! I think i had one more question but cant think of it lol ill let u know if i do!

Thread died two days ago but.watever hopfully OP sees it.

Mechanical misters are great! Mistking most prefered. I'd recommend like 2 or 3 mistings for about 2-4 minutes long. Longer time in between more of a chance to dry out thus decreasing the chance of mold/mildew growth.

If u don't have a auto mister right off. I recommend a chemical sprayer (hand pump) brand new never used w/chemicals. And do no less them 2 mistings and no later than an hr or hr 1/2 before lights out.

Supplmenting.. they have a great powder called repashy calcium plus. It's an all in one. Kinda new. Dust lightly every feeder most days. It can be found here http://www.store.repashy.com/calcium-plus-4-oz-bag.html

Alternative includes plain calcium with NO d3 every day, calcium with d3 2 times a month and a multivit 2 times a month.

Lighting. Most everyone uses the Reptisun 5.0 linear tube light for the UVB. And a regular house bulb 60-100 watts depending on your ambient temps.

You will need digital thermometers and hygrometers to keep track of temps and humidity levels.. which we will get into when were sure wat cham ur getting :)

Curious to the cage setup u wanna go with... Also live plants are a huge help in many aspects.. safe ones can be found here.. http://www.flchams.com/safe_plant_list.asp

This is not a complete care plan just the basics. This is all in my opinion and other suggestions and opinions should always be considered :) happy chaming!
