First Cham! :D

I just got back from repticon SC with a bunch of herps: A rough green snake, an Eastern Kingsnake, a sunbeam snake, an Argus monitor, a canebrake rattlesnake, a Northern copperhead and a veiled chameleon!

Pepito is a Florida wildcaught veiled chameleon. I believe he's about 6-8 months old. When fired up he usually displays lots of blues although he's gone yellow too. There is NOTHING externally wrong with him. Clear, full eye turrets, clean vent, healthy weight and he seems well hydrated too. I'll probably get him wormed as a precaution, but he looks great. He was munching on his umbrella plant on the ride home. He's currently in a 16x24x36 tall cage with a 40 watt basking bulb reaching about 87 degrees. There is an 18" repti glo 5.0 uvb tube bulb on top as well as a fluker's dripper. In his cage there is an umbrella plant as well as many fake vines and plants and several twisted pieces of grapewood. He has no substrate. I'll be feeding him dubia roaches, mealworms, crickets and hornworms on a regular basis dusted with repashy calcium plus.
So far, he's been a very dark grey in his cage, and almost black. He's not hand shy at all and will walk right up my arm and onto my head. Are these dark colors because he's basking and they help him absorb as much light/heat as possible?

He'll be upgraded to a large free-range pretty soon.

congrats on your new chameleon
checking to see how bad his parasite load is woudl be a good idea
dark colour can indicate stress or absorbing heat just as you suspect

Thanks. :)
I'll definitely get a fecal done and probably get him some pancur. He doesn't mind my presence at all, so I'm assuming he's just soaking up the rays.

I took Pepito out to see if his colors are stress colors: They aren't. He fired up a nice blue with light blue and yellow spots on his markings.

Me too!! I love argus monitors, i miss mine all the time

I'll be sure to post extra pics of CRT. ;) My Argus monitor is named CRT, pronounced See-arty because CRT monitors are those really old massive computer screens, and the lizard is an Argus MONITOR.

He's a little hissy at the moment from so much stress, but he's a great lizard. I can't wait for him to get BIG!

congrats on the Cham!! I was at that show and there were a TON of snakes and I was surprised at the number of monitors (sadly only about 1/2 looked healthy)

just out of curiosity where did you get the cham from? Location on the convention floor if you remember. I don't remember the name of all the vendors selling veileds.

woooow That's a good way to invest the Tax return money..

I got my Cham from the blonde haired dude in the back left in the venomous area. The chams were allowed to sit on the lamp fixtures. I bought my sunbeam from the same guy.

Pepito LOVES roaches and hornworms. I've yet to try him on mealworms. He readily cup feeds and I'm working on hand feeding already. Not bad for a Cham that was wild in Florida a week ago.

He just did it! He just ate a hornworm off my finger! It only took about 10 seconds from being introduced to in his mouth! I don't dust my hornworms. Does anybody?
