Finally Got Him

So, finally got our boy Pascal (daughter's choice ) yesterday.

He has settled OK I think.

Basking area is around 91f, and the bottom is around 80f.

Humidity is around 45% a good few hours after a good old misting. And obviously goes up to 85/90% after a good mist and then slowly lowers.

I have a 'little dripper', am yet to see him use it tho. Although he has drank from the leaves.

He has been exploring all day today, up and down his Ficus, which must be a good thing :) .

He has also eaten a couple of locust, and about 6/7 medium sized crickets. All dusted with Calcium (no D3).

That's about it really, time to share a couple of photo's and see what you all think.
Any suggestions welcome.

hi there :)

very nice cham

i see you have a wooden enclosure.i have the same but bigger.
can i ask is the roof still on or removed? i cant fully see.

if not then it needs to be removed and meshed for added ventilation.alone there is not enough even with the basking dome cut-out.
like i have done below.

Ah OK. The roof is still on. I assumed with the 3 vents at the back, and that rail ventilation it would be OK.

I shall find some mesh and see what I can knock up.

How did you attach you nesh the the viv may I ask?.

hi there
chameleons need lots of ventilation.the vents are way to small to provide enough air flow for them, but by adding the meshed roof there will be plenty, whilst maintaining humidity & temp ;)
i secured it with thick staple looking tacks all around.

The basking area is a little too hot. Needs to be ~ 85 degrees

Everything else, including your cham looks great!

Thanks for the feedback guys.
As mentioned above. I've ordered some mesh from Amazon, so that's on its way. Sourced a jigsaw. So will have a larger mesh area in the top hopefully over the weekend.

Yes the basking and ambient temps are high. 80 degrees is too high for an ambient, it needs to be 70-75. 75 being the hottest it gets. Your enclosure is not ideal because even with a screen mesh top it most likely will not have the proper amount of ventilation. A fully screened cage is recommended. Getting the ambient temp down may be difficult in that enclosure but it is necesary. Also the basking temp should be around 85 degrees. It can be 90-91 but only when he is older.

Advice taken on board. I've now moved the basking light away more from the basking spot. It did the trick.

I was in 2 minds over the screened cage. As the UK weather is unpredictable at best. I'll see if I can make this 'work'. And when the upgrade is due when he has sized up (all going well) I'll look in to it further.

But I am taking what you guys say onboard. It's appreciated :)

OK, so out came a jigsaw, I sourced a 40cm x 40cm piece of aluminium mesh, cut a 35cm x 35cm square and have fitted.

The overall viv temp is more stable and down too. Basking is fine. But more noticeably, the air circulation and quality is much better.

Can provide pic's if needed. But thanks guys for the advice. Appreciated

No idea. But was kind of what made him a little different to us.:)

When I first started out I put the basking area to close and I had one burn his on accident once, and part of it fell off which shortened it a little. But this looks like it just grew this way. But like you I think it gives him character nice healthy looking Veiled.:)

I am of the belief that a glass enclosure can be used successfully to raise Chameleons. I have done it for more than 16 years. When you live in areas where it gets cold, and you have a lot of dry heat in the winter this type of enclosure is a lot easier to keep the humidity correct. I have always pumped air in at the bottom to keep it from getting stale. You can use a air pump for an aquarium, but right now I'm using my wifes cpap machine that she has retired for her new one and it works great. But this is how I do it if you are getting enough ventilation without the extra air then great. Some will definitely disagree with me but there has been several breeders successfully keep chameleons this way. Not saying it's the only way just saying it can be done. I have had some male Veileds live for almost 9 years, so something must have been right.
