Fighting branches and getting his lip rolled back

Pete was in his cage today, and he started attacking his branch violently. Full display, biting, and grabbing. Afterwards, his lip was pulled down and he could not get it back on his own, so I flipped it back up to normal. This happened not even five minutes ago, and this was him a half an hour ago. Why is he doing this?

I'm no expert on chameleons but could there have been something in his mouth causing pain and he was trying to get rid of it?

Panther chameleons are known to nibble on branches.

My panther did that and he scared me to death. I found later that its normal for panthers to chew branches.
