There was a huge grasshopper hatch the summer of 2024. I collected about ~1000 grasshoppers in 5-10 minutes. Those grasshoppers lasted me the entire summer. I used a field plankton net.

Just a note. Field collecting insects is a great way provide food for your reptiles. However there is the risk of insects being field collected having been exposed to contaminants and parasites. Over the years I have only had one problem with contaminants and that was from inside my Reptile Room and no issues with field collecting. Contaminants and parasites are a risk though. For those of you that do not want to chance field collecting, breed or buy your own grasshoppers.

This video was filmed during a good hatch year of grasshoppers. I have found some years there are swarms or good hatch years. Then other years there are minimal hatches of grasshoppers. Similar to hatches when fly fishing for Trout.

The grasshopper in the video were swarming as much as they swarmed that summer. The genus Schistocerca (larger locusts) are the species that swarm to plague levels to my knowledge.
