Female Care Revolution

Eggbinding kills many chams. She was on the ground a lot a couple months ago, didnt have a laying bin for her or her cage covered til 3 days before she died. Every time I saw her on the ground she saw me and went back up it.

Sry misread your post a bit, she had no laying bin at all : /

If anyone makes an all you need to know care sheet, feel free to post it here. Would really like to have one;)

Soon. It's already done, it just needs to be published with the rest of the new resources. Be patient. ;)

If your cham needed to lay her eggs she was going to go it, good lay bin or not. Of course it could discourage laying but it shouldn't kill her.

If only that were true. Unfortunately, like legends said, just lack of or an unsuitable lay bin is enough to cause them to become eggbound, which can be fatal quickly all by itself. It would be nice if they would just lay anywhere anyway, but they don't do that. Iguanas also have that problem. Improper laying setup can and does cause death in chameleons, and regularly.

No laying bin for sure could cause problems if there's no type of substrate to bury the eggs. I may have gotten confused when understanding what my vet said regarding Calypsos egg binding. He wanted to give her oxytocin to help induce the labor. I suppose he was saying she will lay no matter what on the oxytocin; if it worked at all, because its success rate is much lower in reptiles than mammals. It makes more sense now that I think about it that way.

Regarding the water dragon...a female can lay eggs without being mated just like some chameleons do. It doesn't usually happen until the female is two or three. They can also develop MBD like chameleons can.

I use the same supplementing and gutloading I do for chameleons for water dragons. I also give them a "salad" two of three times a week using the same greens and veggies that I use for gutloading...along with a small amount of fruit ( apple, berries, melon, pear, etc )

There has been so much trouble with eggbinding in chameleons that there has been a study going on here in Ontario for several years now to determine what to do about it...including possible "birth control".

She was rx'd oxytocin, they are very hard on chams thats for sure. 0.2 ml, 1-2 times a day. Never will do 2 shots a day again, these shots hurt them a lot too.
