So I've done some reading on gout issues.. Not that I suspect Chief having it, but he does has some edema issues in his chest. I'm wanting to see if my feeders are ok, according to 'rank' as in frequency of being fed as staple feeders. I guess I'm worried about protein/calcium amounts in feeders.
1.) crickets
2.) dubia
3.) hornworms
------
Butter worms: I've got 20 coming... I haven't fed him any yet, but I know they are literally the 'Krispy creme' of feeders and to use them VERY sparingly... Heck I don't even know if he'll eat them or not. Took him weeks just to try a hornworm. I think his previous person gave him crickets only and caked them suckers in calcium supplements.
Meal worms he has no desire for, plus I know they can cause impaction if fed too much of them. Haven't tried supers, but I figured since he didn't like meal worms, that he probably wouldn't go for supers.
All are gut loaded with a changing schedule of red bell pepper (and sometimes green), mango, zucchini, apples, blueberries, oranges, yellow squash, sweet potato, carrots, strawberries and cilantro... And they (crickets) have access to water. The dubias tear up grapefruit too. I do not use premade stuff from the stores in food form or the 'cubes' or that creepy water gel junk..
I haven't gotten into making a dry gut load (yet), but I'm slowly working my way through Sandra's blogs on gut loading.
