Feeder Questions

This is one of those 'no right answer' types of questions:

What feeder do you offer your chameleon?

Where do you get your feeders from?

Thanks everyone!

i offer my chams, crickets and dubias as a staple. i also offer super worms, butter worms, silkies and hornworms as treats. i get my crickets from lazy h in labell, fl. i got my colony started a couple years ago and i bought them from forum members here and on the fauna classifieds. i don't ever need to buy anymore dubias since i have a very good colony established. you can buy a lot of the worm treats from mulberry farms. they're a sponsor on here. they carry almost all the worms so you don't have to mess w/ having to search around for each feeder.

How many crickets do you buy at a time? When I was feeding my bearded dragon, I found that most of the crickets died before they could be used. I am wondering if it would just be cheaper over time to just buy them at petsmart and skip shipping.

I was wanting to start a dubia colony ahead of time but I read that many chameleons do not like dubia.

i buy in bulk so thousands at a time. i have a lot of chams so it's way cheaper for me to buy in bulk 2-3 times a month. i don't have a huge die off as i get them a size smaller than what my chams should eat. that way, you can keep them longer. you also have to maintain the cricket bin so they don't die. i clean my bins 2-3 times a week and make sure they have food and water. they're cannibals so they'll eat each other if you don't have a constant supply of food and water.

  • butterworms (buy from local pet shop or one of many online vendors)
  • silkworms (used to breed them but cant be bothered now so just buy them)

Now that is variety!

Is it worth it to start a colony of dubia ahead of time or is it too high a risk that my chameleon wouldn't like it.

i would just buy a couple hundred or so of the appropriate sized dubias. they're not that expensive. if he likes them and eats them for a week or two, then i would buy some adults and start your colony.

My guys get:

Crickets from Ghann's
Dubia I breed
Blue bottle flies from Grubco
small house flies for the little guys from mantisplace.com
Silkworms from whoever has the right size when I need them
moths I catch inside and out :)

Smeagol also gets greens :p
