Feeder Question

A couple of feeder questions:

1. For those of you that feed crickets loose in your chameleons cage how can you be sure that all are eaten before bed and no attackers are left before bedtime!

2. Do you feed your feeders a different good to keep them alive than you feed to gutload or is it the same food.

3. PetsMart had a test tube of non flying flies. Are those good?

4. Are there any good articles on different feeders and how to care for them, how to gutload them, etc?

5. Can they eat red runners?

A couple of feeder questions:

1. For those of you that feed crickets loose in your chameleons cage how can you be sure that all are eaten before bed and no attackers are left before bedtime!
I actually don't keep track anymore because I have such a large cage. I'm not worried about Ender or Peter getting attacked at night. Most of the time, crix like to roam the walls and plants, and they're normally at the top of the cage on a vine away from anything else.

However, what I did in the past when Ender was in a small cage was count how many I put in and during different parts of the day I would count them and check around the bushes and stuff. It's hard to be exact, though.

2. Do you feed your feeders a different food to keep them alive than you feed to gutload or is it the same food.
I feed with the same food. You should be feeding them the things that will keep them alive. I have water cubes for my crix and also give them strawberries, blueberries, carrots, kale, collards, broccoli, etc. and they normally last the whole time I've got them.

3. PetsMart had a test tube of non flying flies. Are those good?

4. Are there any good articles on different feeders and how to care for them, how to gutload them, etc?

1. Veileds are very vigorous eaters and panthers can be a little more finicky and not eat all of their feeders. I have a little cricket vac. to get any uneaten feeders out. I have seen pictures on here of what a cricket can do to a baby chameleon and it's not nice.

2. Personally, I feed my feeders fresh veggies and fruit all the time and the night before I'm going to feed I pull the feeder that I will be feeding the next morning and put them in a deli cup with my dry gut load.

3. Unless you get a really tiny baby the flightless fruit flies will be to small for your chameleon.

4. I agree that Sandrachameleon has some excellent feeder and gut loading blogs, you should definitely check them out. I also have some photos that I can email you of my different feeder bins that I made for another new keeper of one of my veiled babies.

5. If the red runner is small enough, it is a safe feeder. You should not feed anything wider than the space between their eyes.

# 3 - do not get this- you can go to the sponsor page, and get a wayyyy better deal - those are most likely hydei f/f's - many of the sponsors sell them -

#4 - you really better be sure you want these - I have seen HORROR post on here about these things- if I were to receive a box of these - it would make it as far as the burn pit - they are not called "runners" because they are slow- and they can fit threw the smallest of holes !! I feed A LOT of dif/ bugs, and raise 2 types of roach, but this is one feeder I have never ( or ever will ) have -

I agree on the red runners. I had some but ended up getting rid of them due to their ability to infest and difficulty with eradicating them. I only use dubia roaches.

Ha, yeah thanks Cheryl. I have many many feeder types as each of my boys prefers different bugs. They have more variety than they know what to do with.
