Eye / turret discoloration, possible retained shed or damage?

Hello everybody, a couple of weeks ago I made a post about my chameleon Ziggy keeping his eyes closed during the day and generally rubbing and trying to clean it a lot. I took him to a herpetologist who couldn't find anything wrong with him and the problem cleared up after about 2 weeks.

Recently I noticed a big difference in color between his two eye turrets and I am wondering if something is up or I am just paranoid.

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - 10/11 month old male panther chameleon (Furcifer Pardalis Ambilobe Blue Bar) Has been in my care for about 6 months now.
  • Handling - Multiple times a week.
  • Feeding - I feed my chameleon everyday, usually a mix of crickets, locusts, calcium worms and the occasional wax worm. I gutload with oranges, carrots, bell peppers, a mix of frozen veggies made up off a lot of stuff recommended by sandrachameleon. Other than that I feed my crickets Vit-All by Sticky Tongue Farms and Nutrogrub by Vetark.
  • Supplements - I dust my crickets with Minerall without D3 4/5 times a week. Once or twice with Minerall with D3 and with Vita Totaal by Repco once every 2 weeks.
  • Watering - My main watering technique is with a little dripper, but I also offer water through a plastic bird watering cup. I've often seen him drink from the leafs, haven't seen him drink from the cup. I mist about 6 times a day for about 60 seconds every time.
  • Fecal Description - Ziggy usually poops 2 or 3 times a week, usually fairly large droppings which are solid. The urinate is generally pretty white. He has been tested for parasites and tested negative for them.
  • History - Visited the vet a few times because of eye issues. He would keep one of his eyes closed for prolonged times and rub / clean it often.

Cage Info:

  • Cage Type - Mesh Reptibreeze XL cage (24" x 24" x 48)
  • Lighting - Currently using a 100W halogen bulb which is on a dimmer. For the UVB I use a 24W 6%UVB Arcadia T5 D3 reptile lamp. The lights go on at 7:15AM and go out at 7PM.
  • Temperature - The temperature at his basking area is about 35 degrees Celsius, the bottom of the cage not lower than 20.5 degrees Celsius during the day (because of a thermostat) and no Lower than 19 degrees during the night. I measure the temperate with an analog meter in his cage and use the thermostat to measure room temperature.
  • Humidity - During summer humidity is generally 65% to 85% (humid Dutch summers), currently humidity is somewhere between 45% and 65%. I heavily hand spray the cage in the morning before I go to work, the rest of the day I rely on my misting system. I use an analog meter to measure the humidity levels, which is mounted in the top of the cage.
  • Plants - I am using 2 types of live plants, mainly a Pothos and a small Ficus Benjamin.
  • Placement - The cage is located in the living room, no drafts. The cage is placed on top of a small table, with the bottom being about 50cm of the floor, which puts the top of the cage about 170cm of the floor.
  • Location - I am located in the west of The Netherlands.

Current Problem:
There is a very clear difference in color between Ziggy's left and right eye turret. The right eye looks nice and red and generally healthy, where his left eye looks a pretty dull grey / green and quite "rubbery" at some spots.

It looks like he has some retained shed on his turret, which I tried to rub off with a wet q-tip. but that didn't help a whole lot.

Other than the eye not changing color when his right eye does and the retained shed, it does not seem to bother him at all, but I want to be sure I am not neglecting anything.

I added a bunch of photo's showing his turrets, it's the left one I am worried about. Also, he seems to have a black spot on his nose, could this be from rubbing the screen when he roams and do I need to take action on that?

And some more photo's of his other eye.

(Sorry for the poor quality of all the photo's but I had nobody to help me, and had to make due with artificial light)

From the pictures it could possibly be an eye infection. Check with your local vet and try to get poly b sulfate or gentamicin. I would also flush his eye out with saline solution a couple times a day. You will need to get a syringe with a needle. Break the needle tip off so that a little bit of the needle is left and use that to flush his eye. You will want to spray in his eye till his eye turret starts to bulge then stop. Doing this and the eye drops would definitely do the trick.

And if your not seeing any discharge from his eye just do the saline solution a couple times a day. Try to avoid using a q tip as the skin on the eye turret is really sensitive and sometimes will need a shed or two before the eye turret looks right again.

Okay thanks for your input!

What makes you think it might be an eye infection? I haven't seen any discharge come from the eye. Is it because the turret looks sort of wrinkly?

What have the vets told you so far? My chameleon is at the vets overnight today (veiled, young) and they don't seem to know the problem. I keep the lights off at night and they think the temp is getting too low. He looks rather healthy and eats well (only after beginning him to open his eyes long enough to eat crickets) Seems like mine is closing both of his eyes, but the left one more... They are giving him some drops in his eyes with a needle to see if it will help, but I don't know if it will help. I feel like its not something wrong with his eyes... more of a vitamin thing.

Good luck to the both of us :(

When I took him to a vet over a month ago he did a thorough inspection of his left eye, but couldn't find anything wrong. No scarring, inflammation or signs of infection etc.

My herp was pretty reluctant to subscribe antibiotics, so he subscribed me an ointment with Vitamin A that I had to apply to his eye twice a day for 10 days straight, in case something got stuck in the turret.

I don't know if the ointment helped much (didn't seem so at the time), but after 3 weeks he started to get better.

When I did my research I noticed that a lot of eye problems could be due to a lack of vitamin A, but if I am correct, more often in panthers than veilds. I am honestly not experienced enough to give you a proper conclusion on this though.

I hope you cham gets better soon :)

Thank you, I am picking him up from the vet in about an hour. Very nervous :( but we will see!
