eye problems

My 1 year old male Jackson Chameleon stopped eating about a month ago. After a couple of days, I took him to the vet. He suggested that he may have gotten too cold and to keep him under a heat lamp (which I wasn't using at the time because he kept going to the bottom of his enclosure).

He also gave him an antibiotic (Baytril) and recommended that I soak him twice daily.

Check! He started doing much better. Additionally, he wasn't opening his eyes much...like he was too tired.

I noticed after about a week that one eye looked great and the other was closed most of the time. I called the vet and he called in Neo-Poly Bac ointment.

He really started doing well.

After about a week, I was patting myself on the back for my nursing skills.

I went to give him his last dose of eye oint and noticed his eye was largely swollen.

I immediately took him to the vet. He recommended I extend his antibiotic use and take him back in if it wasn't working.

He is eating well and fairly active all good except this eye issue.

The vet wants to sedate him and hospitalize him when he goes back.

At this time vet bills are way out of my budget (my dog just had a tumor removed on top of the cham issues).

I want to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there is something else I can try before hospitalization.

He is in a very large screen enclosure, 100 watt heat lamp and uv light.
I mist his cage once daily, feed him about 5 calcium gut loaded crickets along with his humidifier that runs 12 hours a day on a timer with his lights.

Hi! Can I ask, what was/is your basking temp and what strength of UVB bulb do you use?

Jacksons like it cooler than say a veiled or a panther. So high 70's to mid 80's is a good basking temp for those guys. They also need a little less UVB so a 5.0 is likely enough. If the light is too strong it could be bothering his eyes and if it was too hot that would explain him going to the bottom before.

I'm no expert and I have a veiled but I'm just relating what I read in this great care sheet https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/hoj/634-montane-chameleon-care-info.html

I hope he gets better for you soon! Such a stress for both of you!
