eye problems

I have a 5-month old vieled chameleon. About a month ago he started keeping his eyes closed almost all day. They didn't look swollen, and he seemed to be able to open them if he wanted to, but he wouldn't. I took him to the vet and they gave me eye drops, they helped for about two weeks, but the past few days, he's been keeping them closed again. The left one appears not swollen, and I've seen it open, but the right won't open, and sometimes I see stuff stuck in it and I carefully pull it out. What can I do to fix this permanently?

Closed eyes are not a good sign and pretty serious. It can be caused from anything from type of lighting to supplements. The best way to get help is answer the how to ask for help questions and post pictures of the enclosure and cham. Welcome to the forum where you will find wonderful people more than willing to help.

he is in a 15" glass terrarium at the moment, I'm looking for a cage right now. I mist him with bottled water. there are no live plants. he eats only crickets and meal worms. the daytime temperature is between 85-90 degrees, and the nighttime is about 65-70. the humidity level stays around 50.
I've been told that it might be from the glass terrarium, because there is little ventalation, so it might breed bacteria

Do you have a uvb light? If so what brand, type, etc. It would really benefit your chameleon to answer all the questions as they all pertain to the husbandry which is critical to a chameleons health.

I would research Vitamin A Deficiency. My cham did the same thing and I put him on a V-A regimine and after 3 days his eyes look much much much better!

What specifically do you gutload/feed the insects with?
What specific supplements do you use and how often?

Be very careful with prEformed vitamin A...it can build up in the system and cause problems.

Yes I know about the preformed Vit A but u have to build their supply then cut way back and not give it everyday. Now I only give it 1 a month and I give 1/20th of a drop on a cricket. I gut load with some orange cubes sometimes cat food and water crystals. I think alot of people r having eye problems with there chams and think it's infection when it starts out as a Vit A def. and then it turns into infection. I have confidance that I have researched it thoroughly enough to treat him and he looks sooooooo much better now! He went from not being able 2 see and not eating much 2 seeing great and busting through leaves to get to his food!! ;o)

Your chameleon is overheating in a 15" glass terrarium. You're essentially cooking your chameleon with your heat lamp. Go get a screen enclosure ASAP.
