Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care? Veiled, shop said he was too young to be sexed and we've had him for 8 days.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? Once or twice a day, he's more active when he's out than in.

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? He eats 2nr or 3rd hoppers, trying to get dubia roaches but no where seems to stock them around here. guy loading with fruit and veg.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? Dusting with nutrobal, a calcium balancer and multi vitamin supplement to help bone growth. Twice a week

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? We have a little dripper with the hose at the top of a plastic plant dripping down into a bowl that gets emptied 2-3 times a day. We mist 2-3 times a day to help keep the humidity up. Haven't seen him drink, but assume he must be....

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? His dropping look pretty normal from info I've read on here, quite dark with a white bit attached. Not been tested since we've had him and it wasn't mentioned when we got him.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. Everything we were told in the shop is pretty much opposite to all the answers I've had to questions and from what I've read in other posts.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? It's a wooden tank with glass front. We now know this isn't good for Calvin and will be ordering a reptibreeze today (I have complained to the shop and will be getting a full refund for everything we bought). It's a vivexotic 3ft vivarium.

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? We had a red lamp for heat, which again we now know is wrong and are changing. Also got a UV lamp on for 12 hrs a day and the red lamp is on a thermostat set to 31degrees C.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? The thermostat is just set to 31 C and is at the middle but at the top of his tank.

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? It's kept between 45 and 55%, kept up but misting and measured with a exo terra hygrometer.

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? No real plants.

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? The tank came fixed to an underneath cupboard, no fans, it has a couple of vents but they are small and no traffic. The top stands approx 4 ft from the gound.

Location - Where are you geographically located? Somerset, England, UK.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. His right eye seems to only open as a slit, this has only been like it since saturday night but we were away for the weekend, had someone here to keep everything in order in his tank. When we came back last night it was completely shut and this morning just opened a slit. We have an appt for him this afternoon with a reptile vet but also just wanted the opinion of people from here.
He's also just started his shed, it's only on his legs at the moment. His sides looks really wrinkly and dry but am guessing this is caused by the shred? We gave him a light shower this morning and already it does seemed to of helped.

Also, we are getting a reptibreeze, what lighting/heating is recommended and how is the humidity kept up? If we got a waterfall, would that be sufficient for drinking or would we still need the dripper???

Thanks in advance...

He should be eating around 15-20 crickets (Or whatever you're feeding him) per day. Dubia roaches are a great alternative. As for the gutloading, I am going to give you a link to Sandrachameleons blog. It is VERY helpful. https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/75-feeder-nutrition-gutloading.html

You should use calcium WITHOUT D3 every feeding, calcium WITH D3 twice a month, and a multivitamin twice a month. You could also just get a product called Repashy Calcium Plus, which has everything you need in one. It is meant to be used everyday.

When getting a chameleon from a store, you should have a fecal done. Im not saying your store isn't kept clean, but there are a lot of stores which don't care for chameleons very well. Despite that, fecals should be done every few months just in case.

What a lot of us have learned on here the hard way is to not take advice from most pet shops. They constantly give out wrong information.

I have a Reptibreeze as well. I like it. What size is yours?

My answers are in red. As for him closing his eye, it was probably a humidity issue. You said the shower helped. Just try to up the mistings in the mean time, and mist his eye while you do.

Do not get a waterfall. They are known to breed bacteria, and unless you clean it out EVERY day, he can drink from it and get sick. They also like to poo in them.

I meant the shower helped with the shred, the vet has said its probably conjunctivitis which she said Chams are prone to. Given us some drops and gotta take him back thurs to see how he's gettin on. If they don't work they're goin to have to put him to sleep to prize his eye open and flush the conjunctival sack....

Welcome. Your chameleon is very cute.

Make sure you cover the "catch bowl" with some sort of mesh (nylon net or tulle both work well) so that you chameleon cannot fall into the bowl. Can you see any "spurs" or protrusions behind his back feet? They would look like "heels". Those would indicate a male.

So the vets said Calvin has conjunctivitis. She's given us some drops n we have to go back Thursday. If its no better or worse they're goin to have to knock him out to prize the eye open and flush out the conjunctival sack....she said chams are prone to conjunctivitis and that the drops don't normally work. He has managed to open his eye a couple times this mornin tho and seems to be drinking off of himself when we lightly spray him while misting his tank which I'm pleased about. He doesn't seem to be eatin tho and is very slow and dopey
