Eye Meds

I just got an approx 10-11 month old male veiled from a girl that could no longer care for him. Unfortunately he has an eye issue. His left eye stays closed but can open just rarely does. She did take him to the vet a few days prior to me getting him and the vet said to rinse the eye out with water. I feel so bad for this guy. So I went and got a bottle of distilled water and a medicine syringe and have squirted some water on the eye gently. He doesn't seem to mind it. Also his eyes are sunken in so this tells me he is dehydrated. He has drank 2 syringes of water in the last few hours so this is a good sign. He is now in his cage with my misting system hooked up. My question is.. Are there any eye drops I can order online or buy from a vet that can/will speed up the healing of his eye? Or is what I'm doing going to work it will just be a matter of time? I just got him last night so I don't know what his schedule, feeding etc is like. I do know he ate about 10 good sized crix as soon as I put them in his cage last night. His temp is a steady 75 f and basking 82 f. Misting for a minute every 3 1/2 hours. Reptisun 5.0 12 hrs a day. I just dusted some crix with calc no d/3 to get him on the same schedule as the rest of my chams.

you may consider using saline (like and eye wash saline) solution rather than water (tap or filter).

Also if it is and eye problem I have seen alot of recommendations for long warm showers for you cham...it will help with the dehydration and may also help to flush his or her eyes out.

Question though: What did the vet say was wrong with your chams eyes?

Unless you can verify that there is an active infection using the antibiotics should wait...I remember you saying that you had dripped some water on your chams eye, Did he open it afterwards for a little while?

consider the long shower, up to 30 or 45 min. until you can verify there is an infection going on. that would leave you two choices. finding out from the original owner by directly speaking with the owner or calling the vet and explaining the situation (if you know who the vet is). option 2 is take the cham to your vet.

the shower should help to with eye issue...take a at the whole link posted previously as it went through a pretty methodical process. may give you some insight for what to do until you find out more info...

Good luck

Thanks for all the help. I went and picked up some Sterile Saline Solution. I will try the shower and if that doesn't work I will try some Saline Solution.

cool. I am pretty sure that this will take awhile to clear, if it does.

I do still think that you should find out more info from the previous owners vet....just in case

Good luck

PS keep us informed on your Chams status...

Well I just had him in a luke warm shower for about 25 min. I put him in there in his flexarium. He actually liked it. He was at the top of his cage drinking the water from the top. His eye is staying opened a bit longer but it looks like his pupil is not in the right place. He has alot of white of his eye showing but you can still see the pupil. He was rubbing the eye on the mesh before I put him in the shower. Still no word from the previous owner. I might have to ride this out with him. There is noticeable improvement in the way he is acting though.

It may be indeed be an eye infection, but consider what others have said that you need to determine if it is an eye infection. Frequently in chams, eye problems are a secondary response that something else is wrong.
Does the eye have some discharge? Does it appeared to be sealed shut because of some gooey stuff(I know that is not a technical term, but it is understood by all.) The best time to observe this is before you shower him.
