Eye Issues...

Hello Everyone...My Male Veild has been having issues opening his eyes...he's at the point where currently cannot open either of his eyes...and I'm having to hand feed and water him, He's doing very well with that so far never rejects any of it. I'm currently using the antibiotic "Terramycin" to treat his Eye Infection, I apply it Twice a day, once in the morning and a second time when I get home. Has anyone ever used this antibiotic to treat an Eye Infection before?! When should I see improvement with him opening his eyes?!

Have you been showering your chameleon as well. It is a huge help to shower your chameleon in warm water for 15-20 minutes to help them flush out their eyes. Do this everyday simultaneously with the antibiotic to help your cham clear its eyes out as fast as possible.

Kylerenz: Yeah we've been doing that as well..No luck?! :( I've also contacted a vet he told me to use contact solution to flush out anything that would be in there to help clean out the eyes and I've also been using the Anitbiotics twice daily. Before I did not see him moving his eyes around..Now I see him moving his eyes around but he has not yet opened them up?! I'm going to continue to use the Antibiotics untill he opens them..Hopefully he does that sooner than later!

So the chameleon has not actually been to see a vet?
Keeping the eyes closed often has nothing to do with the eyes themselves but is a symptom of another issue.
Contacting a vet and telling them your chameleon has an eye infection does not allow the vet to make an actual assessment of the problem.
Right now you are trying to treat a symptom ... you need to find out what the actual problem is.

When I have used it I used it in unison with baytril I believe it was. It is a way to fight the eye infection internally while also using the terramycin externally. It seemed to work rather well for me. Took only three days to clear up with those two and the showers. I would ask the vet if they can prescribe that as well.

Hello Brad,

I had contacted the vet and told him what his issues where, that his eyes were closed and that sort. I was unable to bring him to the Vet at that point in time. Anyways he said I could get "Terramycin" and treat him with that...He never said how long it would take for him to recover from it!? If I dont see any improvement in the next week or two I'm going to bring him in. I was just curious to know if anyone had just used "Terramycin" only to treat an eye infection and if it was truely a antibiotic that would clear up his eye issues...!?

Kyle,

Baytril must have been what cleared his eyes up so quickly! Did the Vet tell you why you should use Terramycin in addition since they did the Injection of Baytril?

I understand that.
My point was it may not have anything to do with his eyes.
Without actually going to see a vet with chameleon knowledge and experience, you are treating the part of the chameleon that you suppose has the issue without really knowing.
I hope he gets better soon.

yeah I understand what your saying! Hmm..what do you think could be the problem if its not his eyes?? Nothing has changed with his diet, lighting is good all his bulbs are less than a month old..I've done daily showers up untill a week ago..and still no improvement..!? It was out of the blue that his eyes just Closed up on him!? The only thing I could think it would is an infection? Maybe he got something in his eyes..But I've been using contact solution to help clean that up, and still no improvement there? I'll give it another week to see if the Antibiotics help he's only been on it for a week...so we'll see!
