eye infection or just foreign matter?

When I got home last night I noticed what looked like to be sleep in my chams eye, like the stuff that we get in the mornings. When I brought him out and dabbed it with a damp q-tip he immediately began rubbing his eye against my finger and it came out really easily. He seems completely normal and now that it's out his eye looks fine. Here's a pic of what it looked like right before he got it out
