Eri Silkworms?

Was just browsing ebay and found a listing for Eri silkworms. They look rather interesting - I have heard of them but never seen pics before! Anyone used these as feeders? They are more expensive than normal silkies but they feed on privet rather than Mulberry leaves.

I have never heard of them, do you think they really eat privet or is it a scam?

They have a special diet (like hornworms in the US) they need to eat since privet is a no-no. I believe one of the big silkworm suppliers in the UK sells the diet (and the worms from time to time.)

so the Eri Silkworms are no good for our lil guys due to them being feed on Privet, is that right ?

Yes, unless you feed them the special diet.

Maybe they aren't such a good choice then, unless you can feed them on Mulberry chow? I don't think I will bother with these, especially as I have hundreds of normal silkworm eggs in the fridge!

So coo! Here in the U.S. they are called Cecropia moth. Back in the late 70's use to catch and release. (thought I would grow up and not be so interested in critters) NOT going to happen.
Not sure if the spines/spikes on top can be consumed by Chameleons but if they were a problem, they might not be selling them.

No, the wild counterpart native to the US is Samia cynthia. Samia ricini is the domesticated version.

Interesting - so if I were to buy some that have been raised on Privet, and feed them on Mulberry chow, how long before I can feed them to Ringo ? Or would they still retain some Privet in their system ?

They don't eat mulberry chow. I don't know if they would be safe. I personally wouldn't do it.
