End of the Space Shuttle era

Today at 11:29am EST, Space Shuttle Atlantis took off from the Kennedy Space Center.

Sad and nostalgic day as this marks the end of its 30 year adventure.

Less time waisting away our tax dollars!!

I think that it will be beneficial towards our economy instead of throwing a hunk of metal into space. Seriously? I doubt we will be living on the moon anytime soon.

I am so sad that it is over, now we need to pay the Russians for a ride.

That is what pisses me off. After the space race that lasted more than 2 decades, so much against the Russians, now we are gonna pay them?
not right.

It isnt about living on the moon. Its about learning things that cannot be learned on Earth. Trying to reach the next frontier. Kind of like when the "New World" was the Americas.
There is so much to learn from space, but it seems as if learning new things isn't important to the government.

Britain never had much of a space program, but the shuttle has knocked up 120 million miles I hear, so well done for that - all good things come to an end.....as long as someone is pushing the frontiers I don't really care if it's Yanks or Ruskies ;)
At least you got to the moon first, when it actually counted :D
Eventually we'll work together like ants anyway, then it won't matter which side of the imaginary line you live on.....

I think we should pull all the big foot funding and all those tv shows. Money better spent.

I think it is the begining of the end. The space race did a couple very important things - 1, it achieved the monumental achievement of actually making it to the moon, which is just astounding if you think about it. And 2, it pushed for a much better education in science; it finally made all public schools teach things like evolution that had never been really popular school subjects. And since that was over schools across the country have put less and less emphasis on teaching science, with a particular antagonism towards evolution, which is a huge cornerstone of biology.

Even though a huge percentage of important medical and scientific research is going on here in the states, attracting some of the best and brightest from around the world, the lay population could care less about science and THAT's bad for this country. When people (including politicians) don't see the value in science and research we lose funding and we as a country miss out on valuable discoveries. And then scientific curriculums are empobrished and we miss out on generations of competent scientists.

There are a thousand and one beneficial things that have come out of going to space. So many things have been learned about technology, health, etc. that apply directly into our lives today. Anyone who isn't saddened by the end of this space program has no idea how important it has been.

Its such a bummer and it pisses me off also:mad: Now we will have to hitch a ride to our space station.

This is quite an ignorant statement. Ive gone into my space rant and the benefits that the moon has in another thread. I dont have time right now. Although, there has been many new technologies invented because of the space program that benefits the economy. Its not about living on the moon, maybe mining it but, its about colonizing Mars!!!! The Earth is well over due for a massive castastrophe. We might want to think about colonizing another planet sooner than one may think.

I highly doubt this is better for the US.

seriously? NASA costs you 1/2 of a penny on every tax dollar. 50 years of NASA is the same price as 2 years of our military. The bank bailout exceeded that cost...you want to talk wasteful? Look elsewhere

Yeah i got to agree with Cain. Zac that was really selfish to say.

I honestly could care less about the space program.. yeah, going to the moon is a big accomplishment, but why would we really need to explore Mars? I doubt that 2012 is going to whipe us out and then we have to move to the moon. Seriously the space program wasn't the best invention the governmet has created.. We can use the American tax payers funds to go towards school funding and I understand the fact of it hardly costing us any money, but it would be a better investment to go towards school funding for kids that need a good education and new school books or a new school if needed. That would be a good investment, we can see the moon from our bed room window.. so why should we need to travel to the moon every so often.. JMO. I am a kid and i'm not ashamed of it.

I understand zac but do you have any idea how many jobs will be gone because of the end of NASA? And yet you think shuttig the program will help our economy?

Peoples lives revolve around space and studying all the planets. It may not be important for you....but a lot of people love to learn about that stuff.

Obviously I won't agree with you so there is nothing else to say. I don't care how you take this but I'm not trying to be rude. I to enjoy being a kid.

I didn't look too far into the whole shutting NASA completely down..?

I never knew that my life really revolved around the studying of planets. So... will I die if we quit studying space?

When did I mention your life was threatened because of this? I didn't know you worked there and were about to lose your job.

well pretty much yes:p:D... a part a being human is to be curious and understanding our universe... basically the mere conscious "we are here" and might as well look around:D

i really dont like society as it is, government, mediorcee life, military,... that to me is senseless....we are stuck in a routine to get a job, a car, a house, a spouse, kids, and begins all over again......

to me there are few things people dont appreciate or try to understand, they just take it as it is..... which is hy i respect reserchers and scientists of all fields... they have a drive, the need to know, the "spark" so to sense, that makes us really human....lol i babbled enough

oh and i like space, cuz it has my name in it:D, thats me being a kid:rolleyes::p:cool:

I must have missed that part in science class. ;)

I don't see the fascination in space, so that might be why I am arrogant about it. I don't mean to sounds harsh about them losing their jobs, i didn't look too far into it. And where the title of this thread came from, I didn't assume they were shutting down NASA completely, I thought they were done with launching space shuttles into space. Some people take things too serious I suppose. Oh well. Everything comes to an end at some point and time.
