Enclosure question??

Okay!! :) That leads me to my next question: Exactly how high is their humidity supposed to be?

(and now you're all prolly thinking, *sheesh* not ANOTHER question. lol)
 
I don't mind questions at all. I keep mine between 50 and 75 percent, it varies because it's a screen cage and it's hard to keep humidity in. It also helps a lot when you have a live plant cause the leaves retain moisture. I've read in some chameleon books that you can safely house a chameleon at an average of 40 percent humidity.

Her cage is all glass except for the top which is screen, so you would think that keeping the humidity up would be easy for us, but it hasn't been. (lol) I will def be getting some sort of ivy or something to put in there with her. We also found a cage humidifier thing at petsmart today for $60 that's made for that sort of thing as well, so we may get that too and hook it up. :)
 
Hi, I been keeping chameleons for bout five months now and ran into many of the same problems, I use reptile carpet and is really good...
I got hold of a ficus plant at Bnq, I spray his cage about 3/4 times a day and it keeps the humidity just right...
The dripper was the hardest part, I did the " ghetto paper cup" trick and they just don't hold enough water, so all I did was; get a plastic box, pierce a hole with a point(I.e screwdriver) get some aquarium air tubing put In the hole, make a 90degree bend in the tube somewhere, then let it drip. The bend in the tube means all u have to do to speed up is move it in or out...

Yeah. It is. I read some of the reviews on it and they all were pretty good, so we're thinking about just going ahead and getting it. Idk though b/c it's $60 and it says to use it with the Zoo Med's HygroTherm Humidity and Temperature Controller and it's another $70, so would that even be worth it or should we just get something else?
 
Lol! Idk, I've heard of some people getting a warm water humidifier from like cvs or wal mart and rigging up some sort of PVC pipe leading up to the enclosure, they say it works, but I haven't seen it. I will look into it thou. Those humidifiers are less than 20 bucks and I have a bunch of PVC laying around..... Will see how that goes :-)!

What are the dimensions of your enclosure? One thing to keep in mind is that your cham will feel more secure in a cage that has more height than width and has LOTS of foliage/vines ect. What kind of lighting do you have set up?….UVB, basking? I'm just trying to figure out why you're having trouble keeping the humidity up in a glass tank. :)
 
I bought my first cham last week and they sent me home with orchid bark for the bottom as well as moss....I just shop vacc'd it all out today. It was soaked from all the mistings and had several dead crickets in it. Also, I knew it would start to rot my branches. I told them I had read that I didn't want anything on the bottom, but they were like ohhhh no you must have it for humidity. ....yea okay that didn't work out so well....

As far as dimensions go, I'll have to measure the encolsure tomorrow cuz I have no idea. (lol) It's definitely taller than it is wide. Prolly about twice as tall at least. We don't have very many vines and things in there yet. She has a good bit but not as much as I know she'd love. I'm going to pick up a live plant Friday though to put in there to see if that helps. We have a UVB double fixture thing-a-majig on the top. The bulbs that are in it aren't new, but they were already in there from a previous cham that was in it and he assured us that they were right. we have a heat lamp on the top of the cage as well that she hugs on like it's nobody's business. (lol) Her cage stays at about 80F at the top of it and the bottom is just a little cooler. ....

I have yet to figure out why her cage refuses to hold humidity. The entire enclosure is glass except for the top which is screen (obviously. lol), and for some reason it just never gets humid in there. :-/
 
Some tips

I use the ground coconut fiber called eco-earth and I have some of it lined with organic moss which also helps keep in a lot of the humidity. With the plants make sure to re plant them in organic soil that doesn't have any fertilizer or pesticides. Ask at your nursery and I am sure they will have some.

I Have a ficus that is pretty small but it is growing so don't buy too big of plants. Try to get smaller plants that will grow into your cage instead of getting a large plant that will take over the cage. Oh, and my chamy loves the pothos plants I got for him! he turns a really nice green when he is climbing on them.

One last question what type of "cage" are you keeping your chameleon in? An all mesh/wire cage will help prevent a bit of fungus of bacteria from growing.

I am amazed how you cant keep a glass cage humid! If you can I would recommend going to your Petsmart and picking up a Repti-Breeze and then changing some of the things to it. They also sell a humidifier for reptiles that runs like 50 dollars.

My last question is how big is he? I have a tinny tiny chameleon and I feed him out of a little plastic container because he has a hard time finding them any other way. If the crickets are killing themselves before your chameleon can get to them I would recommend using the same thing until he/she go better at hunting them down. You can also use the little container to feed it meal worms, flightless fruit flies and the occasional wax worm.
