No 2 feet isn't necessary at all. It's mainly that depth to support the large plants. Also adds space for a nice variety of critters and humidity.

Thanks for the info. I thought that the standard drainage tray was sufficient for one potted plant?

I have a pretty beefy pot and small tree in it so I opted for heavy duty for more support an oz of prevention. It's easy to but a small drain into a corner of it as well. Similar to a bulkhead for your mist king. I am likely to replace the plastic bottom for something thicker and more sturdy as well the weight causes some corners to lift and allows for crickets to escape. And depending on how full the drainage tray is meet their death.
