Elaborate UVB bulb testing

Hello,

Long time no talk. I am wondering if anyon has ever done (recently with the new T5's, as with everything else) any real elaborate UVB bulb testing?

If anyone has done any of this, and has the science and notes behind it, I would really like to have a conversation with that person. I am in the midst of doing a overhaul of UVB at my current place of buisness, and want to provide the best possible dose of UV to our reptiles.

The information that I am looking for would be UVB (UVA+UVC if you have those, that would be fantastic) output at multiple distances. We are looking to get something that will throw UV a couple feet, but what we are finding is not too good. We also want UV in the 6-8'' range. We have the solarmeter 6.5, so if data was gatherd without that, what model and type did you use.

Thanks for any help guys.

Looking to know more about UV? Help is on the way....

Hi Nightcrawler,

I am happy to help & you can call me any time....

err...well..... except not like at midnight or anything, please. LOL
:)

But the real top expert in the in the whole wide world on UV & herp care is Dr. Frances Baines.

She is a retired veterinary surgeon who has her own laboratory for testing bulbs and is frequently hired by the big 3 or 4 companies (and a few small ones ;) ) to independently test their stuff.

She is also a consultant to many zoos across Europe.

This is her web-site:
http://www.uvguide.co.uk/

The place to join to contact her as well as many other reptile UV personalities and chat about UV is:

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners/

NOTE: you DO NOT need to own a Solarmeter to join the group!
But Steve, the inventor and maker of Solarmeter is a member of that group as well.

There is always new data in the database there:

Now..
You mentioned UV C below...
and no reptile bulb should ever emit UV C... ....
or (non-terrestrial) UV B rays below 390 nanometers for that matter.

Cheers.
Todd

Here is the expert at work:

PS.

And here's a pic of what good lighting can do:

(I know... I know.... they are anoles & not Chams,
but I got these guys a few weeks ago... so I couldn't resist.
they are so beautiful. I just love them.
)

They were in the shipping box for about 22 hours.

3 hours -- Repeat: 3 HOURS ... after they were remove from the shipping box and put in a planted 55 gallon tank lit with an Arcadia HO t5 6%, a daylight bulb and Jungle Dawn LEDs (plus the usual heat lights.) ....

The males had all gone into full color and they were ALL breeding.
All six of them.

Why?
Because the light and light levels triggered their hormones and thought they were out-side and it was the time to get busy. ;)

The proof sure IS in the pudding.:D
Time to get down with the light!!
