Egg watch Day 26...

If she choses not to eat that's fine....I just wanted to let you know that there was no reason why she shouldn't eat if she wanted to!

My female may have eaten 3 or 4 crickets while she was digging. And I don't remember that I ever saw her eating any. I would put them in and within a day or two they'd be gone ... or else hiding somewhere that I couldn't see them ... or perhaps they even just got buried in the sand or died.

It seems that when they're digging they have a single goal in mind and are put off from feeding. My cham didn't touch silkworms either ... but she loves them again now!!

But it's not like I've had a lot of experience breeding chams so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Most of the articles that I've read suggest that they go off feeding when they're about to lay their eggs though.

Perhaps put a bit of calcium in the water that your giving would help? My chams love to eat hibiscus leaves but I didn't have one in the nesting enclosure. Might be an idea though ... if nothing else it would give your cham some privacy. Then if she decides to eat the leaves she'll get some nutients and moisture at the same time!!

Still digging-off and on-she is tunneling back under the hole that she has dug. I want her to lay-I am so worried about her.

I was very worried about mine too. I don't think there's a problem though unless they come to a point where they aren't able to dig anymore and haven't laid their eggs.

How many days has she been digging for? I'm not sure if their tunnel needs to be perfect or they just instinctively dig until they're ready to lay. I'm sure it'll be any day now. And you'll be SO relieved when she's finished !! ( As I'm sure she will be too! ) :)

Well my girl didn't finish laying her eggs until the morning of the 7th day. But I'm sure every cham is different. Mine wasn't eating much before I put her in the nesting enclosure either. Just keep her warm and watered and I'm sure that she knows what she has to do.

I was told many times to make sure that she doesn't see me peeking in on her when she's laying her eggs. This is very difficult to accomplish. I ended up putting a towel around her enclosure and she would still occasionally catch me peeking.

But after I removed her and searched for the eggs I realized that there's no way I could have seen her laying them as her tunnel went from one end of the enclosure to the other. No wonder it took her that long!!

Keep us posted on her progress!!

Still no eggs, but when I misted her for the night she hungrily ate 6 crickets! That makes me feel better!

WOW ... that's good news!! That should definitely make you and your cham feel better!! ;o)

P.S. The wait for the eggs is nothing. After that you've got a 5-7 month wait for them to hatch. The difference being that the female isn't involved with the hatching process!!

(I actually had a lady at work ask me if these lizards sit on their eggs to hatch them!! Unbelievable eh?? LOLOLOL)

Hey Juli,

On a slightly different note I noticed in your signature that you have Pygmy chams. What are they like? Are they any more difficult than other chameleons? I've only ever had Veileds but I definitely want to try some different species .... more like ALL OF THEM!! LOLOL

Dyesub Dave. :D

Hey Dyesub Dave-Pygmies are fun as can be! They can be kept together and I have a nice trio of one male and 2 females. They are pretty easy to keep once you have the setup created. I got them all as babies and have watched them grow everyday-they are little eating monsters as long as you have some real small crickets for them.

Hey Juli,

Well that's very cool that they can be housed together. What are the differences in the setup, temp, food, etc. between pygmies and veileds?

BTW - In your gallery are those 4 little pygmies coming out of that container?

Female Veiled still digging-Day 29.....

The "Pygmelions" are all housed together in a 10 gallon tank with a screen top and a Zoomed Reptisun 2.0. The bottom layer is Hydroton (http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog...ng-vivarium-products/-/hydroton-clay-pebbles/ ), followed by a layer of activated aquarium charcoal, then a layer of cocoa fiber (bed-a-beast) and sand mixed together all separated by window screeening. I used some frog pillow moss, rocks, vines, and fake and live plants. Here is a link with some pictures of my setup, I have added stuff since then.

Other than that you mist them 3 times a day, feed them dusted pin head crickets, and watch them grow like weeds.

How's your girl Veiled?

Hi there! How's your female doing today? Is she still digging? Sounds like it will be soon. You must be tired of the wait. Hope to see a happy post about her eggs soon :)

Still digging, but last night she ate 6 calcium dusted crickets which made me feel much better.

Hey Juli,
Thats great that she decided to eat. Keep offering food with calcium. The calcium is so crucial right now. Hope to hear from you soon with little eggs. Keep us posted.

Update-I peeked in on her about 6 PM and she had regained her dark gravid colors. At about 7 she had backed into the tunnel with just her face sticking out. I peeked a bit ago and she is still backed into the hole looking very tired. How long after she covers them shall I wait to dig them up?

Yay. Glad to hear she's laying them finally. I'd just wait until she's finished covering them back up. Congrats!

Hey Juli,
I wouldnt waste any time. Get her back in her enclosure and get water to her immediatly your gonna want to get your little girl hydrated. As far as the eggs go no real rush just take care of your girl first. Give me a call if you need any help.

The container is in her enclosure, so as soon as she covers them and goes back up into her vines I will give her a good water. Do I just dig eggs out with my hands-no problems with touching them? I have the containers with the moist vermiculite ready to go.
