egg laying

hi guys
i have a dumb question about my female vield. she has been bred with my male and now ready to lay the eggs. i have never been at this point so i am sort of stumped. i have put in her laying bin and she has been digging, the only thing is she digs for a while then comes out and sits on her branches.
i was just wondering if this is normal or what. all the videos i have seen they seem to do it non stop. the medium is plantation soil as it holds moisture better i think.
any advise would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
glen

This is very common, what she is going is digging test holes, when she is ready to lay her eggs she will dig the final hole that she is planning on using. My suggestion to you would be to wrap a towel or paper around her cage and give her complete privacy. If she sees you watching her dig the hole, she will likely abandon the hole, if this happens too many times, she might not have the energy required to dig another hole, which will cause her to become egg bound, potentially leading to her death. As hard as it is to contain your excitement and leave her alone during this time, it is really the best thing you can do for her. Once she is finished laying you can remove the eggs and put them into an incubation medium. Then make sure your female has easy access to fresh water, and plenty of properly gut loaded feeders, she will be weak and will need the energy! Good luck, let us know how it works out for you!
