Hi guys unfortunately my 10 month old Cham has become egg bound in trying to lay her first lot of eggs. Have been to the vets and had viv set up checked by some of you guys on here as well as the vet and everyone has said all is good. Now the vet said he can perform a vasectomy on her to remove the eggs. My research has suggested that this could be a waste of time as the Likely hood of them surviving an op is very slim. So my question is can any with experience with this advice me with some real answers. As much as I love her I don't fancy spending £150 on an op that MIGHT save her. Cheers guys.

many vets can give her a shot of oxytocin, which should stimulate egg laying, and in fact should try this before surgically removing the eggs, unless there is a seen problem when an x ray was performed (such as a blockage, or if the female has other medical problems going on that would prevent a normal laying process from occuring)

I don't have personal experience but, have send at least 2 threads lately on chams doing good after surgery. He can remove all her egg making parts(not sure if it's called hysterectomy in reptiles or not) and you want have anymore problems from this. May even extend her life. This will have to be your decision though. Search egg bound on this board and read up then decide. Sorry you have too.
Hi camimon. The vet has confirmed and she has had a week of calcium injections and then the oxytocin jab twice. X-ray shows eggs. So this is the next step advised by the vet. She seems to be healthy still eating drinking etc although she is starting to keep her mouth open more. Eyes are ok and she can still move when she wants to. I noticed her being gravid about 6-7 weeks ago so set up a laying bucket using the advice on this forum. She stopped eating about 4 weeks ago for about 5 days. She never used the bucket but she did dig a few times around it. But no laying. Tuff decision.

If shes been oxy shots, and she still wont lay, then I would go ahead and have the surgery to remove not only the eggs, but the ovaries and such as well, to prevent egg laying in the future.
While its always rough on any animal under anestheia, if you trust your vet, and hes done surgeries on chams, (not jsut herps) before, then i would trust him to do the surgery.

Sorry mcbdz that's what I meant hysterectomy. Oops. Not much info about this to give me full confidence in deciding. The vet was recommended by friends with reptiles. He has shown me results from one op he's done this year that's worked out ok and I have spoken to the owner of the Cham to see how she is now. And everything is ok. I'm worried because a lot of people struggle with egg binding weather it be down to poor care or just Cham not wanting to lay but no one really says about getting a hysterectomy.

Hey guys to finish this thread. Nala has had the op and two weeks down the line she's doing really well. So well worth it.I also have pictures of the op if anyone is interested. Cheers for your help.

just some clarifications:
-as chams don't have a true uterus, it's not a hysterectomy. ovariosalpingectomy is the term for removal of the ovaries and uterine ducts. ovariectomy is just removal of the ovaries.
-oxytocin works like a champ in mammals, but is not nearly as effective in most reptiles due to different receptors. arginine vasotocin is like the reptile version, but expensive and hard to find.
