How long can an egg bin stay in the cage without having bacteria problems ? Does the sand need to be washed or dried out periodically ? My female veiled is about 6 months old and does NOT "look" ready to lay eggs but I don't want to miss her chance. I have had an egg bin in her cage for about 6 weeks now because I THOUGHT she was looking for it but there has been no activity in there. The top of the sand dries out and I mist it but I don't know what is happening with the deeper parts.( 12 in deep X 12 in X 8 in wide bin) I don't know if it is smelly and soupy, moldy or dry under the surface sand. Should I change the sand or will that scare her off from using the bin if she needs it? ( I did notice that the potting soil with the live plant does smell after a while and I have had to re-pot the plant. )
