eating ends of branches

I got a baby Sambava living in a schefferla tree, and he likes gnawing on the ends of dead branches. Like where the tree would of been prunned, and its dead and splintery...he loves em. Any one ever seen this, or know why he likes them?

I'd keep an eye on him doing that, since its splintery it can cause either cuts from it being sharp are impaction, if he keeps doing it try and get some branches that are smoother and safer for him.

It could be because he's in a new enclosure and he's exploring by biting/nibbling. My panther did it but I have smooth vines and he stopped it after 2 days.
