Earthworms

Would common earthworms be okay to feed to him (veiled cham)?

We have quite an abundance of these in the backyard, it would be cool if we could learn to breed/gutload them because crickets are a pain in the ass.

I've searched around the forums for similar threads, but no one gave a straight answer.

And yeah, the whole pesticides thing. This backyard hasn't seen pesticides in 100+ yrs and I doubt tiny amnts of pesticide 'fallout' from other yards would do ANY harm at all. We've been using organic fertilizer and putting compost in our lawn for a long while.

I just wanna know if they're good and keepable, considering if there are no pesticides/parasites in them

Eh.... I wouldn't personally. I've tried before. To break a hunger strike. My old cham never looked twice at them and the wouldn't stay in the viv. Let's just say, all it did was gross me out. Lol

Ahahaha maybe my cham would like them?

Probably not. It took me a while to get him to eat an inchworm though. He doesn't like the wormy type stuff, he only likes stuff that waves its arms in the air and says "help me omfg".

I guess I will have to try one and then see from there!

I myself wouldn't get grossed out though. I love earthworms! I should just eat them myself. :p

Yes, yes it could.

Aside from that...

Earthworms live in the ground, chameleons should never encounter them in the wild. Thusly, they contain things chameleons dont need, at all. The short answer is dont feed them. Maybe someone with more time will give you the long answer (why) but I just didnt want you actually trying to feeding them to your chameleon.

People in our city don't tend to use pesticides. Neither do our neighbors.

I will just take your advice and not feed them to him as staple at all, I will avoid them.

Thank you for the advice.

Yes I agree. I think it is difficult to explain the detalis why it is a bad idea for to use the earthworm but advise to not do this.

earth worms you raise yourself (and thus know what's in them) can be used, if rinsed, gut cleansed and cup fed so that the chameleon can grab them. Earthworms can be a good source of calcium, But most chameleons do not like them. highly unnatural

To sum up....it would be a waste of time.....so unless I'm gonna be a hypocrite I better say go for it.......
P.s. - I actually say don't bother, it's a waste of time.......damn I'm funny though :D

funny but i had been considering this for sometime,
i used to have an eel that had a taste for red wigglers...
you can easily gutload, they will eat whatever you put in the bin.
so yesterday after days of red wiggler worms in an oatmeal and fruit mix
i offered one to my veiled, he fired at it and finished it quickly.
the jackson bit his in half.
one thing i think would be beneficial to veileds is red wigglers are high in moisture content.
so, i am new to chams, but as a part of a varied diet, i don't think it would be a negative offer.
we do often need an open mind and a chams empty stomach:eek:

That's what I meant by if they were eventually pesticide free completely, and gutloaded with some awesome stuff. But I think I'd rather go with something more natural, yes.

This is what I was seeing in other threads I searched through. They'd gutload easy, but I don't think I'll go for it.

Thanks guys :D

update on the earthworm experiment...
after a moderately successful beginning,
and davidb will appreciate this part,
my veiled is a bit of a girly boy.
the red wigglers go bonkers when he bites them.
hence the name "wiggler"
and he doesn't like the fight, so at best he eats the first half that he bites.
but he always drops at least half, so maybe not a viable option for minion.

however minion is a puffin and a bendin and a stretchin and not eatin,
so a shed is about to start!

yay:D
